  • [01] Extradition of Iranian citizen not a hostile act against Teheran

The extradition of an Iranian citizen to the US does not constitute a hostile act against the Republic of Iran and does not influence the bilateral relations, the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

The Cyprus Ministry issued a statement Friday noting that it has been formally briefed by the Iranian Government of its decision to recall its Ambassador to Cyprus, following the recent extradition of the Iranian citizen from the island to the United States on suspicion of violating UN arms sanctions.

In the statement, the Ministry underlines that Cyprus acted in compliance to its international obligations and the state of law. It also expresses the hope that the bilateral relations and cooperation will be safeguarded for the benefit of the people of the two countries.

[02] Foreign Minister satisfied with meetings in Washington

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has described his contacts in Washington as very useful and stressed the need for the return of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants, calling it a "test of Turkey's real intentions in Cyprus".

Kasoulides, who met with National Security Advisor to Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan, the leadership of the American-Israeli Lobby, the leadership of the Hellenic Caucus, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as well as with Israeli Ambassador in Washington, will meet Friday with his counterpart, US Secretary of State, John Kerry.

Regarding his meeting with Jo Biden's advisor, Jake Sullivan, the Cypriot Foreign Minister said he referred to the importance of the return of the Turkish occupied area of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants, as a confidence building measure and as a test of Turkey's real intentions in Cyprus.

[03] AHI promotes Cyprus issue to the US Congress

American Hellenic Institute (AHI) makes efforts through the US Congress, to promote the Cyprus issue, calling the United States of America government not to allow pressure on the Cypriot Government for a solution now, since it could prove the wrong path to take as Cyprus is facing an unprecedented economic crisis.

In statements to the Press after a meeting at the Presidential Palace with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, President of AHI Nick Larigakis said that a delegation of the Institute visits Cyprus every year to hold contacts with the political leadership and be briefed about the latest developments on the island.

Concerning AHI's activities, Larigakis referred to the efforts made through the Congress in relation to the Cyprus issue as well as to the information campaign carried out in the USA informing officials and public opinion on the economic situation currently prevailing in Cyprus.
