[01] President Anastasiades received by Patriarch of Jerusalem
President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades continued his contacts in
Israel with a meeting with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem,
Theophilos III. Anastasiades, who began a three day working visit to
Israel on Sunday, was received by the Patriarch who noted that his
recent election as President of the Republic, amidst a severe economic
crisis and political turbulence in the Mideast region, "is a sign of
hope and optimism".
According to an official statement issued in Nicosia, Theophilos stressed
that the Patriarchate remains a loyal witness of peace and this is
confirmed by the fact that the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate stands
as an undisputed guarantee of the survival of the multinational and
interreligious status of the city of Jerusalem.
Cyprus President expressed his gratification for the visit, adding that
with his presence today at the Patriarchate, he wished to highlight
his appreciation for the great work that is being done. The President
pointed out that the respect of the various religions in the city of
Jerusalem as well as the tolerance of other ideologies and races is vital
and even greater than what is taking place within the EU. Later today,
President and his entourage will travel to Tel Aviv to attend a business
forum organized by the Commerce Chambers of the two countries.
