  • [01] Cyprus records second highest unemployment increase

Cyprus recorded in March the second highest unemployment increase in the EU.

According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, compared with March 2012, the unemployment rate increased in nineteen member states and fell in eight.

The highest increases were recorded in Greece (21.5% to 27.2% between January 2012 and January 2013), Cyprus (10.7% to 14.2%), Spain (24.1% to 26.7%) and Portugal (15.1% to 17.5%).

[02] Former FINMIN: Cyprus economy suffered a debacle due to haircut on Greek bonds

The Cyprus economy suffered a debacle when the European Council decided in October 2011 to proceed with a haircut on Greek bonds, former Minister of Finance, Vasos Shiarly has said.

Testifying before the Investigation Committee set up to look into the near collapse of the banking sector and the economy of Cyprus, Shiarly said that neither the banks nor the government of Cyprus had realised the extent of the damage that Cyprus would suffer.

[03] Archbishop: No unacceptable compromises in the Cyprus issue

The economic difficulties the Cypriot people are facing at present will eventually be overcome, the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II has said.

In his Easter message, read out at all churches in the southern government controlled part of the country, the Archbishop announced that the entire property of the autocephalous church of Cyprus is at the disposal of the people to alleviate misfortune and suffering and help save the country's economy.

Referring to the question of Cyprus, he stressed that it must not be neglected, under any circumstances and warns that Cyprus must not be led to "unacceptable compromises" under the pressure of the current economic difficulties because if this happens, there will be no possibility to rectify the situation.

[04] Consumer Price Index shows decrease

The Consumer Price Index for April 2013 decreased by 0,58 units or 0,48% to 119,69 units compared to 120,27 in March 2013.

According to an official press release, "this is mainly due to decreases in the prices of electricity, certain fresh vegetables, petroleum products and rents".

Increases have been recorded in the prices of certain clothing and footwear items.
