  • [01] North London MPs ask UK Government to see into Laiki UK's affected customers

North London's Barnet MPs Theresa Villiers and Mike Freer have expressed their satisfaction with the UK Government's decision to protect customers of Laiki UK, following a meeting with the Financial Secretary to the Treasury Greg Clark at the beginning of the week. At the same time, following representations by many of their constituents, they encouraged him to explore ways of protecting businesses with loans and overdraft facilities in the bank, which were not included in the transfer of accounts to Bank of Cyprus UK.

Clark agreed to brief the MPs regularly and to look at what assistance UK banks could be encouraged to provide to personal customers of the Laiki Bank in the UK as well as to small and medium sized enterprises affected by the recent developments. Laiki UK's savings accounts were transferred to Bank of Cyprus UK, with the exception of loans and accounts that had made use of the overdraft facility. The Treasury minister also agreed to liaise with colleagues at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to see what support for investment in Cyprus by British companies and vice versa could be offered.

The meeting was attended by fellow north London MPs Nick de Bois and David Burrowes, along with the leaders of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK.
