  • [01] Cyprus supports Irish Presidency's efforts for agreement on MFF

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has expressed support to the efforts of the EU Irish Presidency to achieve an agreement on the Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF) the soonest possible.

Speaking during a meeting of the EU General Affairs Council in Luxembourg, Kasoulides said that the Council must pay attention to the issues raised by the European Parliament, especially on the issues of flexibility and of an interim review of the MFF. He also agreed that the Council must examine the amount of the 2013 amending budget.

As regards the proposal of some member states to establish a new mechanism with a view to safeguard the fundamental principles of the EU, Kasoulides said that everyone agrees that the rule of law, democracy and human rights are fundamental principles of the EU, and that it will be helpful to have a discussion on the issue of their implementation by member states, and referred to Article 2 of the Lisbon Treaty, which refers to issues, such as solidarity.

He said that instead of considering the creation of a new mechanism, there can be a structured dialogue and the Commission can prepare an annual report on these issues.

[02] Cypriot MP assumes duties as PACE General Rapporteur on Children

Head of the Cyprus delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Stella Kyriakides has been appointed on behalf of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development as General Rapporteur on Children until March 2015.

According to an official press release, her appointment is particularly important and an honour for Cyprus. Kyriakides assumed her duties on Monday, in the framework of the second part of the 2013 PACE spring session that began in Strasbourg.

Her duties include intervening in the field of rights, protection and development of children and promoting the participation of these children in the social framework they belong.
