[01] EU Speakers Conference to be held in NicosiaThe role of national parliaments in enhancing social cohesion during times of austerity will be among the issues on the agenda of the EU Speakers Conference, which will take place in Nicosia from April 21 to 23.The Conference will be attended by the presidents and vice-presidents of parliaments of EU member states, as well as the President of the European Parliament. Also present will be the presidents of the parliaments of Croatia, Iceland, Montenegro and FYROM. A total of 220 delegates from abroad are expected. President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou referred to the Eurogroup decision on Cyprus and pointed out that the parliaments cannot be left in the dark and be asked to merely vote in favour of measures that have been decided through non-transparent procedures, especially when these measures destroy the structure of the society. [02] House to express its opinion on MoU and loan agreementPossible amendments or changes to the Memorandum of Understanding and the loan agreement between Cyprus and the Eurogroup will depend on the structure of the unified text that will come before the Cyprus House of Representatives for ratification, House President Yiannakis Omirou said on Thursday. He added that the Cabinet will possibly submit the unified text to the House on April 26, and added that this is in essence an international agreement. As with all such agreements, Omirou went on, the House will have the possibility to discuss, study it and express an opinion about it. Speaking to the press here today, Omirou noted that there is really no difference in the procedure the House follows in ratifying either international agreements or the unified text of the MoU, irrespective of the fact that the MoU and the loan agreement have to be ratified first by the parliaments of six EU member states, where national constitutions call for such a procedure. [03] Slovakia firmly supports Anastasiades, especially through crisisSlovakia "firmly supports" President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, "especially now, when you need more solidarity in light of the uncertainty over the impact of the adjustment programme on the real economy," new Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Cyprus Oksana Tomova has said.Presenting her credentials on Thursday to President Anastasiades, Tomova said she came to Cyprus "during a very difficult period," noting that "last Friday the Eurogroup endorsed the international bailout package which means that Cyprus has secured its financing needs for the first time since 2011." Tomova expressed certainty that "the Cypriot Government, under your wise leadership, will do all that it can in order to re-organise and restart Cyprus' economy." [04] Lebanon hopes Cyprus will overcome current economic difficultiesLebanon`s new Ambassador to Cyprus Youssef Sadaka expressed hope on Thursday that Cyprus "will succeed to overcome the current economic difficulties" with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades` "wisdom, courage and historical approach."Presenting his credentials to President Anastasiades, Sadaka also expressed hope that "our two countries continue to cooperate closely for the exploitation of the respective Exclusive Economic Zones for the benefit of our two nations." "On the international level, friendship between Cyprus and Lebanon has been translated into mutual support on most issues, both drawing our aspirations from the fundamental rights of people to live in peace and freedom as well as for states to enjoy independence and sovereignty, and claiming them always high, strengthened by the support of the international community, particularly the United Nations through all the relevant resolutions," he said. [05] Cyprus' energy prospects discussed at Oil and Gas SummitCharles Ellinas, Chairman of the Cyprus National Hydrocarbons Company (KRETYK) and Solon Kasinis Vice President of KRETYK said on Thursday that Cyprus will become an energy hub, capable of covering a large part of the EU energy needs, with prospects of exporting gas to Asia.Speaking during the "2nd Annual Cypriot-Greek Oil & Gas 2013 Summit" organized in the southern coastal town of Limassol, Ellinas said that a liquefied natural gas terminal in Vassilikos area will be ready to deliver natural gas to the Cypriot market in 2018, whereas by the end of 2019 Cyprus will be in a position to export liquefied natural gas. Ellinas also noted that in 2025 Cyprus will be able to produce 25 million tones of natural gas per year and cover 50% of the EU's additional energy needs, therefore becoming an important player in the international energy market.
