[01] UNDP announces new projectsThe United Nations Development Program-Action for Cooperation and Trust (UNDP-ACT) announced on Wednesday the launch of five new inter-regional projects, which will be implemented by Cypriot civil society organizations in collaboration with regional partners in nine different countries.According to a press release, the projects refer to the support of youth organizations, volunteer activities, the civil society actions and media issues. The five inter-regional projects will be funded with 30.000 dollars each by the UNDP and the USAID. The countries that participate in the projects are Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Romania, Jordan, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Iraq. [02] London Council passes motion in support of CyprusThe Barnet Council in north London passed a motion on Tuesday condemning the "truly awful attacks" on peoples' savings in Cyprus, describing them as a seriously worrying turn in the response to Europe`s ongoing economic crisis.The motion was proposed by Councillor Barry Evangeli followed by a contribution in amendment by Councillor Brian Coleman. The council notes notes that the situation currently facing Cyprus is of great concern to the Borough`s Cypriot community and welcomes the Treasury`s decision to implement a UK protection scheme in support of depositors at the UK Laiki branches and thanks local Conservative MPs for helping to this end. [03] Financial crisis will not destabilize armed forces, Minister pledgesThe financial crisis should not be used as a pretext to undermine or destabilize the role of the armed forces on the island, Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou has pointed out.Speaking after a meeting with President of the House of Representatives of Yiannakis Omirou, Fotiou said that as long as there is a threat from Turkey and the Turkish occupation forces and as long as Turkey continues to question and threaten the Republic's sovereign rights, the armed forces will continue to be strengthened. This, he added, "is the aim and the strategy we must follow, despite the problems we are facing due to the economic crisis."
