Minister says [01] Cyprus issue-economy the focus of Greco-Cypriot talks in AthensPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has had separate meetings with the President of the Hellenic Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis and Greek President Karolos Papoulias.President Anastasiades, on his first official visit to Athens since his election in late February, is also meeting with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.In statements he made before the meeting, Meimarakis welcomed President Anastasiades and expressed the Greek Parliament's readiness to cooperate with the new Cyprus government in the difficult task ahead as regards the economic crisis and the Cyprus issue.On his part President Anastasiades expressed gratitude for all the help Greece has provided the Republic of Cyprus, mentioning in particular Cyprus' accession to the EU and Greece's part in it and the fact that a great number of Greeks have given their lives for the cause of the island's independence. [02] Cypriot MP: Role of parliaments in EU economic governance importantThe European Parliament and national parliaments have to seize available opportunities to help the EU economic governance system become more easily accessible to citizens, Cypriot deputy Demetris Syllouris said speaking during a meeting organized by the Danish parliament in Copenhagen on the role of EU national parliaments in a more comprehensive financial, fiscal and economic policy framework.Syllouris, who represented the House of Representatives as member of the House Foreign and European Affairs Committee, referred to the current economic crisis, which as he said, brought to the surface problems in the structure of the EU economic governance framework and mainly in the Eurozone, an insufficient macroeconomic supervision and an ineffective coordination of EU member states economic policies. According to an official press release, Syllouris spoke about the importance of measures taken by governments to solve problems and the need to conclude and implement the framework of strengthening economic governance. [03] Trade deficit at €4.3 million in 2012Cyprus' trade deficit was recorded at €4,320.0 million in January-December 2012 compared to €4,906.5 million in the corresponding period of 2011.According to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service in its monthly report on Trade Statistics total imports/arrivals, from EU and third countries in the period between January-December 2012, amounted to €5,740.5 million as compared to €6,310.5 million in January-December 2011. Total exports/dispatches in both EU and third countries in January-December 2012 were €1,420.5 million compared to €1,404.0 million in January-December 2011. [04] Cyprus will exercise its sovereign rights despite Turkish threats, Minister saysCyprus exercises and will continue to exercise its sovereign rights with full respect to the Law of the Sea Convention, despite threats and challenges from Turkey, Defence Minister Photis Photiou said during a meeting on Monday with the US Ambassador in Nicosia John M. Koenig, who was accompanied by the embassy Defence Attache.According to an official press release, Photiou informed the US Ambassador that one of the priorities of the new government is to submit an application for accession to the "Partnership for Peace" and asked for US support in this effort. The Defence Minister and the US Ambassador reaffirmed once again the positive climate of cooperation between the two countries and expressed the conviction and the political will to further develop bilateral relations.
