  • [01] Neofytou: Haircut on deposits would amount to leaving the Eurozone

Harsh terms for Cyprus` bailout agreement, such as the haircut on deposits, cannot be accepted, as they would amount to being shown the door to leave the Eurozone and the EU, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives and Vice President of the Democratic Rally Averof Neofytou has said.

Neofytou discussed the issue in New York with Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the US Senate Robert Menendez, and had already conveyed the same message at his meetings in Washington with US officials, and believes that they will exert their influence to soften the terms set by the IMF.

He referred to President Nicos Anastasiades` commitment to reunify the island but noted that the priority of the new government was the recovery of the economy and thus any initiative regarding the Cyprus problem would not be helpful at this time.

[02] Tourism Minister meets airlines and tour operators in Berlin

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lakkotrypis, accompanied by a delegation of the Ministry and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, held in Berlin a series of contacts with representatives of airline companies and major tour operators.

The contacts were held on the sidelines of the ITB - International Travel Trade Show Berlin.

According to an official press release, the results of the meetings confirm German interest in tourism in Cyprus as well as cooperation prospects between institutions of the two countries.

[03] Agreement on development of Cyprus' airports receives award

The government's concession agreement with a private investor on the development and management of Larnaka and Pafos International Airports has been awarded the Best Transport Project award by the World Finance Magazine.

An official press release said that the agreement has been awarded as the best Public-Private Partnership agreement signed in the EU transport sector in 2013, as it effectively deals with the challenges posed by such projects, ensures quality of design and is considered to be innovative compared to other similar partnerships.

"The award is a recognition of the success of the agreement" the press release said.

[04] Malaysia does not accept Cyprus' occupation, says High Commissioner

Malaysia maintains a principled stance as regards the Cyprus problem and does not accept the occupation of Cyprus, the country`s High Commissioner to Cyprus, based in Beirut, Ilanko Karrupannan has stressed.

The Malaysian diplomat held a meeting on Wednesday with President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou, who briefed him on the Cyprus problem, Turkish aggression against Cyprus' sovereign rights in its Exclusive Economic Zone, as well as the economic situation in Cyprus.

According to an official press release, Omirou referred to the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, saying that this has not been achieved yet due to Turkey's intransigent stance, which occupies 37% of Cyprus territory since the invasion in 1974.
