  • [01] New Nicosia MPs ready for hard work ahead

Four new MPs are taking over from their ruling party DISY colleagues who have either been appointed at a ministerial post or have moved on to the European Parliament.

Maria Kyriakou, Nikos Nouris, Rikkos Mappourides and Prodromos Prodromou will be assuming their duties after their affirmation before the House plenary.

They are taking over from Ionas Nikolaou who has been appointed Minister of Justice and Public Order, Harris Georgiades who is the new Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Christos Stylianides who has been appointed Government Spokesman and Andreas Pitsilides who was declared earlier on Monday as new MEP taking over the seat of Ioannis Kasoulides, who is the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.

[02] Minister of Defence says Cyprus to apply to Partnership for Peace

Minister of Defence Fotis Fotiou has said that among the priorities of the new government will be to apply to the Partnership for Peace for membership.

Fotiou, who met on Monday with Greek Ambassador Vasilis Papaioannou, said that among the priorities of the new Cypriot government will be the accession of Cyprus in the Partnership for Peace, which, however, he said, "will not be an easy task".

He stressed that coordination and good strategy are needed, as well as collaboration with other countries, especially EU countries and above all with Greece.

[03] Kasoulides briefs ambassadors on the new foreign policy orientation

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides is meeting foreign ambassadors based in Nicosia to brief them on the new orientation of Cyprus' foreign policy, in the framework of the application of Cyprus for accession to the Partnership for Peace.

Speaking after a meeting with British High Commissioner Mathew Kidd, Kasoulides said that he wanted to brief the ambassadors on the "slight correction", as he put it, in Nicosia's foreign policy. He pointed out that "our intention to apply for accession to the Partnership for Peace aims at showing that we are not different than the other 26 EU members.

Additionally, Kasoulides said Cyprus' foreign policy intends to prove that Nicosia can offer added value to the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, by a new upgraded policy in the region.
