[01] Defence Minister says he will upgrade the National GuardPhotis Photiou, Cyprus' new Minister of Defence, said Friday that he will seek to upgrade the Republic's armed forces, the National Guard, to be able to respond adequately to its mission.Speaking during the hand over ceremony at the Ministry of Defence, Photiou noted that as long as Turkey threatens Cyprus' sovereign rights, the armed forces must be upgraded. He said that the pillars of his policy aim at protecting Cyprus' sovereign rights in its Exclusive Economic Zone, by establishing new military partnerships and upgrading military diplomacy. As a first step, he said that Cyprus will apply for accession to the Partnership for Peace and secondly it will upgrade its National Guard. [02] Minister of Agriculture: Agricultural development a top priorityA new national strategic plan for the development of agricultural economy will be the ministry's top priority, newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, National Resources and the Environment Nicos Kouyialis has said, according to an official press release issued on Friday.Speaking during the hand-over ceremony, Kouyialis thanked President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades for trusting him to fulfill this role and his own party's EVROKO leader Demetris Syllouris who approved his appointment. He pledged to work hard to fully comply with the government programme as regards the ministry. [03] New Minister of Education calls for educational allianceNewly appointed Minister of Education and Culture Kyriakos Kenevezos has called for an ‘educational alliance' between the ministry, the teachers, the children and parents.Speaking during the hand-over ceremony, on Friday, Kenevezos promised that he will work decisively to conclude issues which remain open ended and are in accordance with the government programme. "Where there are changes or differences, we will respect what has been done so far. However we will follow our own policies with the same determination," he noted.
