January 2013 [01] President-elect Nicos Anastasiades to be sworn in on February 28Nicos Anastasiades, who was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus in Sunday's second round of presidential elections, will be sworn in on February 28, during a special session at the House of Representatives.Director General of the House Socrates Socratous told CNA that House President Yiannakis Omirou may deliver a speech before the ceremony, and that after the ceremony Anastasiades will be addressing the House. The state, political and religious leadership of the country, as well as foreign ambassadors, will be invited to attend the ceremony, in the presence of outgoing President Demetris Christofias. [02] European Left concerned over the result of the presidential electionsThe European Left (EL) has expressed concern over the result of the presidential elections in Cyprus.In a press release, the Party of the EL says that it is "very concerned about the election of a right-wing president, ‘man of confidence' of European leaders, at the head of the Republic of Cyprus". "His lack of clear vision concerning the military occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkey, his pro-NATO position in a very tense geopolitical area; and his assumed submission to the injunctions of the troika are very serious" the EL said. [03] Collections of Inland Revenue Department increased by 20% in January 2013The total collections of Inland Revenue Department (IRD) marked an increase of 20% or 40.52 million euros in January 2013, compared to the same month of 2012.According to data released by the Inland Revenue Department, the increase is mainly due to the 47% increase of the special contribution to defence fund. The total collections of the IRD for January 2013 reached 240.259.908 euros from 199.738.918 euros in January 2012. [04] German President congratulates Anastasiades and assures of supportPresident of the Federal Republic of Germany, Joachim Gauck, has assured President-elect of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, that Germany will continue maintaining its partnership with Cyprus and supporting the efforts to lead Cyprus out of "its serious economic and financial crisis".In a congratulatory telegram, Gauck congratulates Anastasiades on his election as President of the Republic of Cyprus, adding that "Germany and Cyprus have been linked by close and amicable relations for many decades, and these ties form a good basis for continued cooperation in a spirit of mutual trust". Furthermore, he stresses that "you are assuming your responsible office at a time when Europe and your own country are facing major challenges". [05] UK Cypriots' leader congratulates Anastasiades and pledges supportThe President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, Peter Droussiotis, offered his warm congratulations to the President-elect of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, adding that he, his Federation colleagues and the whole of the UK Cypriot community looked forward to working closely together with the new President and his Government in order to bring justice to Cyprus and the island's reunification.Following the second round of elections, Anastasiades, leader of Democratic Rally party (DISY), backed by Democratic Party, won with 57.5% of the vote in a run-off against left wing AKEL-backed Stavros Malas who secured 42.5%. In a statement of congratulations, Mr. Droussiotis said that "the Cypriot people have elected the Republic's seventh President in a free and democratic ballot and have given Mr. Nicos Anastasiades a strong mandate to govern for the next five years".
