  • [01] Garoyian: We have to create conditions to beat the crisis

    President of the Democratic Party (DIKO) Marios Garoyian has said that, before the dangers faced by Cyprus, it was important to create conditions of unity, cohesion and cooperation, so that "we can all prove worthy of the history and expectations of our people."

    Speaking after casting his vote at a polling station in Nicosia for the second round of presidential elections, Garoyian said "everyone`s aim as of the day after the elections should be to create the conditions to address the serious financial problems, create conditions to support our struggle for the liberation of our homeland, restore our rights, and also create conditions for the citizens to find once again their dignity and confidence, and that of the state."

    [02] European Party President says today is a day of duty

    President of the European Party Demetris Syllouris said that Sunday was a day of duty, noting that no one could "defect" before the responsibility to help the country.

    Speaking after casting his vote at a polling station in Nicosia, Syllouris said "today is a day of duty and to the call for the recovery of our country, to restart the economy, we are present, as I believe all citizens will be."

    "None of us can defect before the call to help our homeland, before the responsibilities," he said.

    [03] Voting in Brussels running smoothly for Cyprus` presidential elections

    Voting in Brussels began at 0900 local time (0800 GMT) for the second round of presidential elections in Cyprus, and is running smoothly.

    There are 272 registered voters in Brussels. In last Sunday`s first round, 235 Cypriot citizens had voted, bringing the turnout to 85.66%.

    A total of 1,139 polling stations are operating in Cyprus for 545,491 voters, of whom 311 are on the list of the enclaved (persons living in the northern Turkish-occupied areas of the Republic), and 14,441 who will be voting at one of the 40 polling stations abroad.

    Voting in the United Kingdom for Cyprus` presidential elections began smoothly at 0800 local time (1000 Cyprus time) at all polling stations set up for Cypriot citizens.

    A total of 13 polling stations have been set up in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol, for 6,116 registered voters, of which 3,741 are in London.

    [05] Green Party says day after elections should find everyone united

    General Secretary of Cyprus` Green Party Ioanna Panayiotou has said that it was important that the day after the elections finds everyone united, and called on the citizens to exercise their right to vote.

    Speaking after casting her vote at a polling station in the southern coastal town of Limassol, Panayiotou called on everyone to vote and expressed hope that "all these conflicts during the pre-election period will end and everyone together, united, in a collective manner, with transparency, will proceed to change the political culture."
