for elections [01] Eurostat: Cyprus' trade deficit down in first 11 months of 2012Cyprus' trade deficit decreased by €500 million on an annual basis during the first 11 months of 2012, reaching a total of €4 billion, Eurostat data shows.Total exports reached €1.3 billion, marking an increase of 5% in relation to the same period of the previous year. Total imports on the other hand were reduced by 8% reaching a total of €5.3 billion. [02] Cyprus' Election Service putting final touches on preparations for electionsCyprus' Election Service is placing the final touches on preparations for the Presidential elections to take place on Sunday.Chief Returning Officer, Andreas Assiotis met with officials to be in charge of polling stations in Nicosia, entrusting them with the ballot boxes to be used on Election Day. He called on them to follow the rules in place diligently in order to be able to fulfill their duties successfully. [03] Archbishop stresses "we will claim our inalienable historical rights"Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has stressed that the people of Cyprus, led by the Church of Cyprus and their new political leadership, will claim their inalienable historical rights.Commenting on a Financial Times article which said that the Cyprus economic crisis 'can serve as leverage for the solution of the Cyprus dispute', Archbishop of Cyprus said that the reference causes indignation and outrage among the Cypriot people. The head of the Church of Cyprus in a written statement assures the Financial Times columnist that "there is no chance for a Greek hand to sign a two-state solution as Erdogan and Davutoglu dream of". [04] EU Education Ministers discuss youth unemploymentYouth unemployment and the need to restructure European education systems were among the issues discussed during Friday's Council of Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Ministers. Cyprus was represented by Education Minister Giorgos Demosthenous.Addressing the session on the role of education and skills in solidifying social cohesion, Demosthenous said that there is a contradiction in having a well-trained young generation, which is plagued with high unemployment rates. The goal of education systems, he added, should be the formation of comprehensive personalities and of a workforce able to shape the future economy and labor, in a way that safeguards personal welfare, social cohesion and Europe's robustness. [05] First holding facility for illegal immigrants opens in CyprusThe first immigration detention centre where illegal immigrants will be detained until they are deported to their countries, opened on Friday in Menogia, in the Larnaka district."By building immigration detention facilities Cyprus fully complies with its obligations deriving from international conventions and EU Directives", Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca has said. The Minister expressed hope that the operation of the immigration detention centre will alleviate the problem of detaining illegal immigrants in prisons. [06] All set for Sunday`s presidential elections in CyprusA few hours before the ballots open for the presidential elections of 17th February and all is set, Chief Returning Officer Andreas Assiotis said. Speaking during a press conference in Nicosia, Assiotis expressed confidence that the election process will run smoothly and that the candidates and their supporters as well as all involved in the procedure will behave accordingly.A total of 545,491 people will vote in Sunday's elections, including 311 enclaves (Greek Cypriot who live in the northern Turkish occupied territories). 14,441 Cypriots will vote at the 40 polling stations that will operate abroad. A total of 1,139 polling stations will operate for the elections. The final result will be announced at around 2030 local time (1830 GMT).
