[01] 2013 a difficult year for tourism, says Commerce MinisterThis year is expected to be a difficult one for tourism, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis said, noting however that 2012 was a very positive year as regards arrivals and revenue from tourism.Addressing the 35th Annual Hotel Conference, in Nicosia, Sylikiotis said that 2012 can be described as a successful year, since in spite of difficulties, "we managed to bring to Cyprus 2.46 million tourists, compared to 2.39 million in 2011, which means an increase of 3%". Referring to the revenue from the tourism in 2012, the Minister pointed out that it recorded an increase compared to the previous year, estimated at around 10%. [02] Christofias: Upgrading of illegal regime the worst dangerPresident Demetris Christofias has warned that the greatest danger for Cyprus right now is the upgrading of the status of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, in the island's northern Turkish occupied part.He also warned that, in these difficult times, any risky manoeuvres on the part of the Greek Cypriot side could prove to be detrimental. Addressing an event to honour people who were wounded during the military coup d` etat and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Christofias said that "approaches which distance us from the principles for a Cyprus settlement and contradict the things we have achieved at the negotiations will place us on an equal footing with the Turkish occupation force and lead to the loss of the support we have been enjoying at an international level." [03] Government: No inspection on money laundering from private firmsThe government does not accept any kind of inspection from a private firm with regard to money laundering allegations, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has stressed, noting that certain quarters within the EU are trying to blackmail Cyprus.The Spokesman assured that the government has not and will not discuss a haircut on Cyprus' bank deposits. Speaking here Wednesday, Stephanou said that it is at least a contradiction in terms to see some Europeans not trusting organizations such as Moneyval of the Council of Europe, which has already conducted four inspections in Cyprus since 1998, but trusting private firms. [04] Cyprus generates less municipal solid waste in 2011Municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2011 recorded a decrease of 2% compared to the previous year.According to the Statistical Service, it is estimated that the total amount of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2011 stood at 560,000 tonnes compared to 572,000 tonnes in 2010, recording a decrease of 2.0%. From the total amount generated in 2011, 80.2% was delivered to landfills, 8.6% was composted and the remaining 11.2% is estimated to have been collected for recycling. [05] Cypriot banks ask for more time to announce preliminary resultsThe island's two biggest banks, the Bank of Cyprus and the Popular Bank, have sent a request to the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission asking for more time to announce their preliminary financial results for 2012.According to CNA sources, the two banks argue that they cannot meet the February 28 deadline for submitting their preliminary financial statements because they have not as yet been informed about the final amount investment management firm Pimco believes is needed for their recapitalization. Consequently, they say, anything announced by the banks might be misleading to investors. Global investment solutions provider PIMCO has been assigned with the due diligence (accounting and economic value assessment) that would determine the capital needs of the Cypriot banking system at the request of the Troika (European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund) as part of Cyprus` application for financial assistance from the EU bailout mechanism. [06] UN chief and Greek Foreign Minister to discuss Cyprus issueGreek Foreign Minister Demetris Avramopoulos and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon will discuss the question of Cyprus, when they meet on February the 21st.Avramopoulos will be at the UN headquarters next week, on his way to Canada.
