  • [01] President: We will continue the struggle for reunification

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has assured that "we will continue the struggle for reunification, conciliation and deliverance from the occupation" of Cyprus' northern third by Turkey, and will continue to prove "our determination for a solution."

The President said "we are ready for a compromise but there will be no compromise with the occupation, division, the logic of two states in Cyprus."

Speaking at an event in Nicosia on the occasion of declaring the year 2013 as "The Year of Makarios", President Christofias said Archbishop Makarios, the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, "led our homeland in truly trying times" and "fought for a Cyprus free from colonial rule and away from nationalistic extremities and chauvinism."

[02] Cypriot tennis player Baghdatis faces tough Rotterdam draw

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has been dealt a testing draw at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, which began in Rotterdam.

According to an announcement, Baghdatis will face in the first round the in-form Benoit Paire, who reached the final in Montpellier last week, losing to Richard Gasquet.

It is added that the first ATP World Tour 500 tournament of the season is stacked with top players, including Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet.

[03] Cyprus to host conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has stressed the need to remain focused on the primary goal of further strengthening the EU as a whole and on enhancing its credibility in the eyes of its citizens.

Omirou was addressing a meeting of Secretaries General of EU Parliaments that convened in Nicosia to finalise the programme and the agenda of the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments that will take place 21-23 April in the capital.

The April proceedings, he said, will be divided into three sessions and will concentrate on issues reflecting the priorities, which were set by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, aiming at generating a dialogue of direct interest to the European citizen.
