  • [01] Paphos tourism project to help stimulating Cyprus' economy, says President

President Demetris Christofias laid the foundation stone of the "Cyprus Limni Resort", a major tourist project at the Limni area of Polis Chrysochous, in the northwest of Pahos region. During his speech, the President expressed hope that these development projects will stimulate the Cyprus economy, create new jobs and enhance economic activity.

The project under construction aims to enhance Cyprus as a tourist destination, while developing an environmentally downgraded mining area into a tourist and residential area.

In his speech, President Christofias said that the particular development will attract high-end tourism, offering a very good holiday destination in the Mediterranean. He also referred to the potential benefits of the project for the troubled Cypriot economy, and noted the government's achievements in tourism.

[02] Cyprus problem is now in a deadlock due to Turkish stance, President says

President Demetris Christofias has said that Cyprus problem is now in a deadlock due to Turkey's and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu stance.

Speaking at the celebration ceremony of Saint Maronas at the cathedral church of Maronite community in Cyprus, President Christofias stressed that in the last five years successes and convergences have been achieved at the negotiations, which in total constitute significant improvements in relation to previous plans that attempted to be imposed but rightly were rejected by the Cypriot people. "We subvert the unacceptable punishing climate prevailed internationally and particularly in Europe after the referenda (in 2004), with the correct stance of the Cypriot people and with demonstrating Turkey`s intransigence and the goodwill of our side."

President Christofias added that with determination and seriousness the government managed to create an important perspective for the island in a strategic, political and economic point of view, with the delimitation of the EEZ, the researches for natural gas and the second licensing round. "We achieved that having on our side in a crucial time for the future of Cyprus, the entire intentional community", he stressed.

[03] London meeting sends message of cooperation between communities

Turkish and Greek speaking Cypriots affirmed their common aim of ending the occupation of the northern part of their island by Turkey and reuniting their country, in a meeting held in London on Thursday evening.

Representatives of Turkish Cypriot trade unions on a four-day mission to London were received by the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK at the Cypriot Community Centre in north London.

The two sides exchanged views on the Cyprus issue, ascertained that they share the same concerns over the future of the island and agreed on pursuing every available opportunity to join forces against the almost four-decade long Turkish occupation.

[04] Cyprus secured good deal in discussions for next MFF, Spokesman says

Cyprus secured a "very good deal", Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said, invited to comment on the European Council decision for the next Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020.

Speaking in Limassol, Stephanou noted that, under the circumstances, Cyprus has achieved very good results, adding that from being a net contributor, the country will essentially turn into a net beneficiary. He added that this fact, along with the recognition of Cyprus' particularity as an island state, will provide the background to lay more claims in a number of issues and become more assertive. He added moreover that Cyprus will also benefit from EU aid, aiming to tackle unemployment.

Stephanou also said that Cyprus' efforts during the past semester, when the country chaired the Presidency of the EU Council, contributed in reaching a deal on the EU budget framework until 2020, amid difficult circumstances and through compromise. The deal, he noted, must now be presented before the European Parliament.

[05] There is a need to change strategy on the Cyprus issue, says House Speaker

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has referred to the need to change tactics and strategy to the overall management of the Cyprus issue adding that is now an urgent necessity to do so.

Omirou was speaking at a memorial ceremony in the annual commemoration of the hero Yiannakis Stephanides at the Ayios Prokopios Church in Metochi Kykkou.

He said we have to denounce the Turkish stance before the international and the European community, with a countering solution which to delineate the boundaries for national and physical survival of Cypriot Hellenism, on the basis of the joint communiqué of the National Council of September 2009, that can form the basis of a wide-unity.
