[02] EP President assures that Cyprus will receive EU help

European Parliament President Martin Schultz has assured Cyprus House President Yiannakis Omirou that Cyprus, just like other Eurozone member states that have faced problems, will receive EU help.

In statements to CNA, after a meeting with Schultz, Omirou said that "Martin Schultz spoke very warmly of Cyprus, of the need to show solidarity on the part of the EU and that Cyprus should be dealt with in the same way that other eurozone countries faced with economic problems were dealt with.

"He assured me that he has no doubt that this help will be given to the Republic of Cyprus", Omirou said.

[03] SPD Chancellor Candidate sets prerequisites for solidarity to Cyprus

SPD Chancellor Candidate in Germany's election Peer Steinbruck has said that he wants to have real indications that the government of Cyprus is undertaking significant achievements to combat money laundering.

Steinbruck, who is paying a visit to Athens, referred to three criteria in order to express his solidarity to Cyprus: the shrinkage of Cyprus banking sector, the combating of money laundering and the introduction of a financial transaction tax.

Replying to a question, the SPD Candidate said that the banking system in Cyprus is definitely oversized.

[04] CNA and Europarltv sign partnership agreement

A partnership agreement was signed between CNA and Europarltv with a view to bring Cypriot citizens closer to EU activities.

In his speech, President Christofias referred to the friendly relations with Slovakia, saying that the Czechoslovak Ambassador to Cyprus the late Emil Kemplousek had offered to mediate for a meeting to take place between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political leaders. That historic meeting took place in Prague, in May 1989 and was the beginning of a series of bilateral meetings between the political parties of both communities in Cyprus, which still take place at the Ledra Palace Hotel, in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia.
