  • [01] German government says no decision on Cyprus yet

The German government said on Wednesday the euro zone had not yet taken any decision on a bailout request from Cyprus while Berlin`s own position has not changed since last week's meeting of finance Ministers from the currency zone.

"There is no new position on Cyprus. Germany, just like its European partners, has not yet taken a decision on aid to Cyprus, neither in the positive nor the negative sense," Reuters cited German government spokesman Steffen Seibert as saying.

Asked about the possibility of Russia granting Cyprus an extension to its five-year 2.5 billion euro loan, German finance ministry spokesman Martin Kotthaus said any contribution from non-euro zone countries with a stake in Cyprus was welcome.

[02] ESI improves in Cyprus and euro area in January

Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) improved in Cyprus and the euro area in January, the European Commission said Wednesday. In January the ESI increased by 1.4 points in both the EU (to 90.6) and the euro area (to 89.2).

In the EU, confidence improved in services, construction, retail trade and among consumers, while deteriorating slightly in industry, the Economic and Financial Affairs Directorate General of the Commission said in its monthly survey. In the euro area, confidence picked up in construction, services and among consumers and remained broadly unchanged in industry and retail trade. In both regions, the ESI rose for the third consecutive month but remains well below its long-term average.

Among seven EU Member States, the ESI registered increases in Germany (+2.5), the Netherlands (+1.0), Spain (+0.5) and the UK (+0.5). It remained unchanged in Italy and broadly stable in France (-0.3), while deteriorating in Poland (-1.3).

[03] Cyprus and Serbia to set up Joint Committee on Police cooperation

Cyprus and Serbia will set up a Joint Committee aiming to provide the Serbian police with Cyprus' experience on the European Union level.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Cypriot Minister of Justice and Public Order Loukas Louka and Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, held in Belgrade in the context of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias' visit in Serbia. In statements, Louka said the Committee is provided for in a previous Agreement signed with Serbia on Police cooperation.

The agreement, he said, will provide the Serbian Police with the experiences of the Cypriot Police on the EU level and especially the experience acquired during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2012.

[04] Cyprus and Serbia strengthen their ties even further

Cyprus and Serbia held on Wednesday their first intergovernmental meeting, making one more step in enhancing their bilateral relations. The meeting was held in Belgrade under the presidency of the Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic. The two countries also signed two bilateral agreements, namely an Agreement in the field of Maritime Transport and a Readmission Protocol. In statements following the summit,

Christofias reiterated his country's support to Serbia EU perspective, while the Serbian Premier branded Cyprus as Serbia best friend in the European Union.

"This summit constitutes the culmination of the long-standing and traditionally friendly relations between the peoples and our countries," Christofias said, adding he and Dacic discussed ways for the strengthening of the bilateral ties in the fields of trade, the economy, energy, the environment and culture.
