  • [01] Mavroyiannis: People went beyond the call of duty for a successful EU Presidency

Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis, in an assessment of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which ended in December last year, is full of praise for the people who worked to make it a success. "They went beyond the call of duty, to serve their country and the EU. I am proud of them," he told CNA in an interview, on the expiration of his posting on January 31st, 2013.

The EU Presidency, he pointed out, was nothing more than underscoring one's competencies and responsibilities as these emanate from EU membership. He also said that Nicosia, throughout its six month rotating presidency which ended on 31st December last year, never raised the Cyprus problem at its own initiative, but it certainly responded to remarks relating to the division and the continuing occupation by Turkey of its northern part, since 1974.

On the involvement of Turkish Cypriots in the EU Presidency, he said the Presidency worked very hard to involve the Turkish Cypriots on an equal par with the Greek Cypriots, recalling that Turkish Cypriot non governmental organizations have participated in meetings to help draft the Presidency programme and all Ministries have employed Turkish Cypriots.

[02] Cypriot MPs brief European counterparts on combating money laundering

Cypriot MPs have briefed European officials and national parliamentarians in Brussels on measures taken by Cyprus to combat money laundering. An official press release issued here Tuesday said that a delegation of the Cyprus House of Representatives traveled Monday to the Belgian capital to participate in the meetings of the Parliamentary Week of the European Semester, organized by the European Parliament between January 28 and 30.

Cypriot MPs, who participated yesterday in the meetings of European political groups, had the opportunity to analyse the measures taken by Cyprus to combat money laundering. They also stressed the need for Europe to show solidarity with Cyprus and agree on its request for financial assistance.

The delegation comprises Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Averof Neofytou, Deputy Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Christos Stylianides, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs Nicholas Papadopoulos and members of the Committee Stavros Evagorou, Pampos Papageorgiou, Nicos Nicolaides, Giorgos Perdikis.
