  • [01] Protection of personal data in Cyprus, is at a high level, says Commissioner

    Commissioner for Personal Data Protection Yiannos Danielides has described the level of personal data protection in Cyprus as "very high".

    In statements to CNA on the occasion of the Data Protection Day, which is marked on the 28th of January each year, he said that the legislation in Cyprus concerning personal data protection was passed 12 years ago and the situation is "very good".

    "There is a constant information campaign to the public about their rights", he said.

    [02] Developing e-skills important for competitiveness, growth and employment

    Cyprus has decisively boost digital skills in the sectors of education and labour, European Commissioner for Education, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou noted.

    Addressing a workshop organised by the Department of Electronic Communications of the Ministry of Communications and the European Commission, under the title "Going local III - Electronic Skills - Tools for the Future", the European Commissioner noted that the use of information and communication technologies poses a new challenge for Europe's education sector.

    "The real challenge is how to ensure in the 27 member states a prosperous society that offers high level of basic skills to all" she said. Digital skills are particularly valuable in the labour sector and it is estimated that by 2015 around 750 thousand jobs that require such skills will be created, Vassiliou said.

    [03] El Salvador willing to further develop trade and businesses relations with Cyprus

    El Salvador, whose National Civil Police takes part in the UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus, gives appropriate attention to the situation in Cyprus and supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem, the country's new Ambassador to Cyprus AĆ­da Luz Santos de Escobar, noted.

    The new Ambassador of El Salvador to Cyprus presented her credentials to the President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, here on Friday.

    She referred to the excellent relations between the two countries since 1999 and expressed El Salvador government's willingness to further develop trade and businesses relations with Cyprus.

    [04] CNHC discusses next steps in block 12 development with Noble

    The Cyprus National Hydrocarbons Company (CNHC) discussed the next steps in Cyprus` offshore block 12 development with a senior team from Noble Energy headquarters.

    A press release issued by CNHC says that the two-day discussions which took place on January 22 and 23 focused on three issues.

    The two sides made a comprehensive update on both the upstream (offshore installations and sub-sea pipeline) and midstream (LNG Project) activities undertaken so far by Noble and they reviewed the commercial activities for the LNG Project and the terms of an LNG Project Memorandum of Understanding to incorporate the principles for developing the LNG Project.

    [05] Cuba supports Cyprus' sovereignty

    Cuba has firmly defended and will continue defending, as a matter of principle, the right of the Cypriot people to have a nation that promotes values of coexistence, integration and work to achieve a future of peace, with no foreign interference and the strict adherence to sovereignty and independence, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Aramis Fuente Hernandez, said here Friday.

    Presenting his credentials to President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, he reaffirmed Cuba's support for the efforts to unify Cyprus according to the resolutions of the UN and the Security Council and reiterated his solidarity with the people and Government of Cyprus.

    Hernandez referred to the close and strong bonds of friendship, respect, mutual support and solidarity with the causes of the two peoples that have characterized the relations between the two countries and Governments during more than 50 years that have elapsed since November 1960, when diplomatic relations were established.

    [06] Argentina`s participation in UNFICYP proof of its commitment to Cyprus Republic says Ambassador

    Argentina`s long participation in UNFICYP is an irrefutable proof of its commitment both to the Republic of Cyprus and to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations for the maintenance of international peace and security and peaceful settlement of disputes, said Friday the new Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, stationed in Tel Aviv, Carlos Faustino Garcia presenting his credentials to the Cypriot President Demetris Chistofias.

    He also emphasized that the Argentine Republic continues to support the Republic of Cyprus' efforts aimed at peacefully resolving the Cyprus issue, within the framework of United Nations resolutions on the subject. In this context, he said, Argentina has been participating since 1994 in the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Cyprus, UNFICYP.

    He added that during this period more than 12.000 Argentine troops performed duties on Cypriot land. Argentina currently staff consists of 295 troops.
