  • [01] Archbishop intervenes for Russian financial aid to Cyprus

The government has asked Archbishop Chrysostomos to intervene on its behalf to the Church of Russia regarding a request by Cyprus for financial assistance from Moscow.

The primate of the church of Cyprus said on Thursday that the government had asked him to mediate towards the Church of Russia in order to intervene to the Russian government in an effort to secure a positive approach to the Cypriot request.

The Archbishop Chrysostomos said that he communicated with the Russian Patriarch and asked him to visit the President of the Russian Federation to convey his request. He also expressed optimism for a positive outcome of this attempt.

[02] UNSG and Turkish Foreign Minister discuss Cyprus problem

The Cyprus problem was among the issues UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon discussed on Thursday in Davos, Switzerland, with the Foreign Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.

According to a UN Secretary General spokesperson, "the Secretary-General reiterated his expectation that full-fledged negotiations to find a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus would resume at the earliest possible opportunity."

Ban and Davituglou also exchanged views on the crisis in Syria and prospects for a political settlement. The Secretary-General once again expressed his appreciation for Turkey's generous hosting of Syrian refugees since the start of the crisis, according to his spokesperson.
