  • [01] Police ready for EPP Conference

The Police are taking all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of the European People`s Party (EPP) Conference, which will take place in Limassol on Friday with the participation of EU member state leaders.

Police Spokesman Andreas Angelides said Thursday that security measures will be in force from the moment the leaders arrive, through their stay and participation in the Conference, up to their departure.

He also said that about 180 members of the Police will be involved in the operation, and that two crisis centres would be operating, one at Police Headquarters in Nicosia, and one in Limassol, where the Conference will take place.

[02] Full throttle preparations for presidential elections

The Ministry of the Interior is pressing on with preparations for February's presidential elections, in which about 545,000 people will have the right to vote, of whom 12,736 are new voters.

Head of the Electoral Service of the Ministry of the Interior and Deputy Chief Returning Officer Demetris Demetriou has told CNA that the final number of voters will be clear on January 14, when the period for objections expires, adding that the registered Turkish Cypriot voters are around 600.

Demetriou noted that a total of 1,102 polling stations will operate, of which 418 in Nicosia, 315 in Limassol, 183 in Larnaca, 54 in Famagusta, and 132 in Paphos.
