[01] Labour Minister: Legislative initiative to end unfair competition
Draft legislation aims at ending unfair competition among workers, by
foreseeing stricter sentences for the non-implementation of the principle
of equality, according to Labour Minister Sotiroula Charalambous.
Speaking Sunday in Larnaca, the Minister also noted that incentives
will be given to companies to hire unemployed people in new jobs to be
created through grant schemes. Charalambous said that 2013 will be "a
difficult year", adding that the continuation of recession makes things
even tougher in the labour market.
She went on by saying that "recession does not generate jobs", adding that
as time goes by, the number of available job positions is shrinking. She
also noted that the Ministry of Labour has sent a draft bill to the
Cabinet, making the implementation of the principle of equality even
stricter. This, she explained, will be enforced to reduce preference
for cheap labour from some EU member states and end unfair competition
among workers
