  • [01] Cyprus and Russia sign protocol on economic cooperation

A cooperation protocol between Cyprus and Russia was signed Tuesday in Moscow at the end of the meeting of the Seventh Cyprus-Russia Intergovernmental Committee for Economic Cooperation.

An official statement says the protocol provides for further strengthening relations in the two countries and reinforcing and developing cooperation in the fields of economy, commerce, tourism, transport, health and other sectors.

The protocol was signed by Finance Minister Haris Georgiades on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and Ìanylov Igor Yevgnievich deputy Minister of Agriculture, on behalf of the Russian Federation.

[02] Foreign Minister: Cypriots endure blatant violations of human rights

For more than 39 years the people of Cyprus continue to endure blatant violations of their fundamental human rights as a result of the illegal military occupation of 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued here Tuesday on the occasion of the Human Rights Day.

The Ministry notes that hundreds of Cypriot missing persons remain unaccounted for, the internally displaced persons continue to be deprived of their homes and properties while the few hundreds of enclaved people who still reside in the occupied part of Cyprus continue to endure restrictions in exercising their fundamental human rights.

Turkey, it adds, has obligations deriving from international law, including judgments of the ECHR, to restitute these inalienable rights.

[03] Prague business forum promotes Cyprus as a services centre

A business forum has been organized in Prague in the framework of the common effort of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry, and Tourism to promote Cyprus as a services centre.

Presentations at the forum referred to the benefits offered by Cyprus' tax and legal system for foreign investors, to the establishment of Cypriot businesses and to Cyprus an international business centre.

During the forum an invitation was extended to the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic for Czech businessmen to visit Cyprus and continue contacts.

[04] Galanos and Kayalp support the return of Famagusta to its lawful owners

Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos and the so-called Turkish Cypriot mayor of the Turkish occupied town Oktay Kayalp have issued a joint statement expressing their strong support to the immediate commencement of the process of returning the fenced off area of Varosha-Famagusta to its lawful owners and inhabitants, under the supervision and control of the UN, as provided in the relevant decisions of the UN.

The statement was read out and signed by Galanos and Kayalp during joint press conference they gave on Tuesday for Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot media.

As noted, following a meeting during which they had a frank and constructive discussion, Galanos and Kayalp decided to issue the statement, in which they underline that "looking forward to a reunited Famagusta, we express our strong support to the immediate commencement of the process of returning the fenced off area of Varosha-Famagusta to its lawful owners and inhabitants, under the supervision and control of the UN, as provided in the relevant decisions of the UN," they noted.
