investigation [01] National Guard under restructure to meet European standardsDefence Minister Photis Photiou has said that the National Guard is currently under a restructuring process and its modernization is based on the standards of modern European military structures.Speaking during a ceremony during which black berets were awarded to newly recruited soldiers, Photiou said that "restructuring the composition and the operation of the armed forces according to modern demands would help us set up an effective and capable army." He noted that "we anticipate to setting up armed forces that will be ready to address any challenges, which are unfortunately culminating dangerously on the part of Turkey," whose troops occupy Cyprus' northern part since 1974 when they invaded. [02] Concerted effort needed to agree on joint communiqué, President saysConcerted efforts are being made these days to agree on a joint declaration between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides, which will allow a new round of negotiations on the Cyprus issue to begin, President Nicos Anastasiades has said.The Greek Cypriot side seeks to define the basic principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem "so that we can anticipate that the dialogue will lead to an end of Turkey's occupation, to peaceful coexistence and the creation of a modern European state that will give all its citizens the opportunity to prosper", the President said. Addressing an event organised in the southeastern coastal city of Larnaca, on Monday, Anastasiades said that "it is with great patience that we watch what is happening and the many and various claims" put forward by the Turkish side. [03] Cyprus' economy shrinks less than expected in third quarterThe Cyprus economy contracted at a slower pace than originally estimated between July-September of 2013, figures show.Third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 5.3% in real terms over the corresponding quarter of 2012, an improvement on the original estimate of a 5.5% contraction. It is the ninth consecutive quarterly contraction for the Cyprus economy on an annual basis. The contraction began in the third quarter of 2011 and the economy of Cyprus entered recession in the second half of 2011. [04] Missing persons' relatives call on Turkey to allow effective investigationRelatives of missing persons have called on Turkey to allow effective investigation into the fate of all the missing persons in Cyprus.In a press release, the missing persons' relatives association marks the 65th anniversary since the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights on December 10 1948, noting that it was an event which gave people hope that justice and mutual respect and understanding would prevail. However, the association adds these hopes have been dashed. "We continue to expect that at last Turkey will realize that being honest on this matter is a fundamental obligation that it needs to fulfill by allowing for effective investigation into the fate of all the missing persons of Cyprus," it adds.
