    Defence Minister Photis Photiou has said that the National Guard is currently under a restructuring process and its modernization is based on the standards of modern European military structures.

    Speaking during a ceremony during which black berets were awarded to newly recruited soldiers, Photiou said that "restructuring the composition and the operation of the armed forces according to modern demands would help us set up an effective and capable army."

    He noted that "we anticipate to setting up armed forces that will be ready to address any challenges, which are unfortunately culminating dangerously on the part of Turkey," whose troops occupy Cyprus' northern part since 1974 when they invaded

    [02] Trade deficit drops by €917 m. in first 9 months of 2013

    A significant drop in imports in the first nine months of 2013 resulted in a reduction of the trade deficit by €917.5 million compared to the same period of 2012, data published on Monday by the Cyprus Statistical Service show.

    According to the monthly report "Intra-Extra E.U Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)" for September 2013, total imports/arrivals (covering total imports from third countries and arrivals from other Member States) in January-September 2013 amounted to €3,554.9mn as compared to €4,349.7mn in January-September 2012.

    Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other Member States) in January-September 2013 were €1,200.7mn compared to €1,078.0mn in January-September 2012.

    [03] Cyprus' economy shrinks less than expected in third quarter

    The Cyprus economy contracted at a slower pace than originally estimated between July - September of 2013, figures show.

    Third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 5.3% in real terms over the corresponding quarter of 2012, an improvement on the original estimate of a 5.5% contraction.

    It is the ninth consecutive quarterly contraction for the Cyprus economy on an annual basis. The contraction began in the third quarter of 2011 and the economy of Cyprus entered recession in the second half of 2011.

    [04] House President meets with Johannesburg Archbishop

    President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou met on Monday with Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria Damaskinos, whom he briefed on the Cyprus problem and the financial situation on the island.

    Archbishop Damaskinos referred to the history and the role of the Orthodox Church in South Africa.

    Omirou, who is in South Africa representing President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades at the funeral of Nelson Mandela, also visited the Greek community of Pretoria and their church, and expressed satisfaction over the work of the community in promoting issues concerning Hellenism.
