  • [01] Economic sentiment indicator improves for seventh consecutive month

The Economic Sentiment Indicator for November 2013 registered an increase of 3.5 units compared with October owing to mainly an upbeat in the services sector and to the consumer's improved expectations.

This is the seven consecutive increase of the ESI, according to the University of Cyprus` Economic Research Centre, which compiles the index.

"The improvement of the ESI in the services sector comes from the fewer negative evaluations on the economic situation and demand in the last few months and the clearly improved expectations on turnover in the next quarter," the ERC said.

[02] Panel of Experts on Iran paid a working visit to Cyprus

The Panel of Experts on Iran discussed in Cyprus the ways by which the Republic of Cyprus enforces the UN sanctions against Iran.

According to an official announcement, at the invitation of the Republic of Cyprus the Panel of Experts on Iran, paid a two-day working visit to Cyprus on 25-26 November 2013. The Panel was established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1929 (2010), and is operating under the direction of the Security Council Sanctions Committee, established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1737 (2006),

The Panel held informative meetings and thorough discussions with officials from government Departments, Ministries and Authorities with responsibility for enacting legislation or regulations relevant to the measures on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and for actual implementation of sanctions. The Panel also had the opportunity to meet with relevant representatives of the private sector. The consultations, chaired by the Political Director, were conducted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which undertook the responsibility for organising and coordinating the visit.

[03] More than 30 projects underway at Cyprus Institute, Dr Pittas tells CNA

More than 30 research projects are underway at the Cyprus Institute, which promotes research in areas such as energy, environment, technology in archaeology, computation-based science and technology.

In an interview with CNA, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) Dr Andreas Pittas said that the Institute has established partnerships with world-leading institutions for the development of each of its individual centres, such as with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Illinois.

Dr Pittas told the Cyprus News Agency that MIT's expertise in the field of natural gas is just one example on how the Institute's international network of partners can provide a series of advantages.

[04] CCCI launches "What if…" bicommunal awareness campaign

The reunification of Cyprus will create conditions of security and stability and Cyprus will undoubtedly constitute the most stable place within its key region, which will result in attracting large foreign investments and will boost sectors of the economy now in recession.

This was one of the conclusions which were drawn by Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) which were in tandem with interviews of on the matter of Greek Cypriot Economy Nobel Laureate Christophoros Pissarides and Turkish Cypriot economist Mustafa Besim, which were presented, on Thursday, during the launch of a bi-communal awareness campaign by the CCCI in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot Chamber.

Under the slogan "What if…" the two chambers presented the economic prospects of an eventual solution of reunification of the island, divided in 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
