  • [01] Clerides a courageous and pro-European politician, says Italian President

Glafcos Clerides was a paradigm of a courageous and pro-European politician, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has said. In a message of condolences to the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades for the death of former President Clerides, Napolitano says Clerides was a good friend of Italy and that his loss "has moved me deeply".

The Republic of Cyprus, he adds, is left with the political legacy of a great leader and president while Europe is left with the example of a politician with great courage, who was firmly convinced of European destiny and believed in his country.

Napolitano concludes by conveying on behalf of the Italian people and himself his most heartfelt condolences to the President Anastasiades, the Cyprus people and Clerides' family.

[02] Former UNSG Special Adviser says Clerides left an invaluable legacy in Cyprus

Former President Glafkos Clerides worked tirelessly and with deep conviction for a unified and prosperous island and he leaves an invaluable legacy in Cyprus and in the international community, Former UNSG Special Adviser in Cyprus Michael Moller has said.

In a statement to CNA, Moller noted that "there is no doubt that his personal integrity, passion for politics and search for sustainable solutions will continue to inspire future generations".

Moller said that he was saddened to learn of the passing of former President Glafcos Clerides and extended his sincere condolences to his family and to the people and Government of the Republic of Cyprus. "I was privileged to meet with President Clerides on many occasions and to benefit from his sharp political intelligence, deep knowledge of the history of Cyprus, wise counsel and sense of humour.

His support for the good offices of the Secretary-General in Cyprus and for UNFICYP was greatly appreciated by the United Nations, and helped to facilitate the work of the Organization", Michael Moller said.

[03] US urge all parties in Cyprus to resume peace

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators are making important progress and the US urge all parties to make the most of the current window of opportunity and to restart comprehensive talks, Jennifer Psaki, Spokesperson of the US State Department has said.

Psaki was speaking to the press on Monday following a meeting US Secretary of State John Kerry had with the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who is visiting the United States.

Psaki said that Kerry and Davutoglu talked about a range of issues including the Cyprus problem and they both expressed their commitment to the issue. "There's no change to our policy to announce, but it was one of the issues discussed.

Turkey plays, as I said, a very large role in so many ways", Psaki pointed out. She went on to say that for months now, "we have been talking about Cyprus and we have been talking about Nagorno-Karabakh and quietly, we have been trying to work ways that our ambassadors, who are front and center in this - in these initiatives, are continuing that process".

[04] Former EU official reminiscences Glafcos Clerides

Former Head of the European Commission representation in Cyprus Adriaan van den-Meer says he is honoured to have met the late President of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides and expresses his sympathy to the people of Cyprus.

In a written statement to the CNA Adriaan van den-Meer says that he considers himself "very much honoured to have met President Clerides a couple of times".

"He was my ‘first president' and I have very good memories about him. We discussed many issues serious but also lighter ones" he says.
