  • [01] Cyprus Sports Organisation signs agreement with Israel

An agreement for cooperation in sports was signed today in Tel Aviv between Cyprus and Israel. According to a press release, the agreement was signed between the Cyprus Sports Organisation and the Israeli Sports Authority.

The agreement provides for exchange of expertise and know-how in the field of competitive sports, exchange of athletes, teams , coaches and athletes with disabilities and participation in coaching camps, sharing knowledge, experiences and information on "sports for all" programs.

[02] The basis for Cyprus negotiations must be clear, House President says

A clearly defined negotiations' basis is a precondition for embarking in Cyprus talks, House President Yiannakis Omirou said on Thursday. Omirou received the US Ambassador in Nicosia John Koenig, who said from his part that there is a "window of opportunity" for a Cyprus solution.

According to an official announcement, Omirou said peace talks were in a deadlock, due to the intransigent stance of the Turkish side. He added that there must be a clearly defined basis for negotiations, taking into account relevant Security Council resolutions, High Level agreements and EU principles.

Koenig said this period could provide a window of opportunity, given developments in the wider region. The US, he went on, support efforts for a Cyprus solution under UN aegis.
