    The solution of the Cyprus problem remains the top national priority for Greece, said the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Vassilis Papaioannou in a written statement on the occasion of the celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Cyprus.

    In his statement, Papaioannou extends his heartfelt wishes and expresses his deep appreciation to the people of Cyprus for their struggle for freedom and democracy, safeguarding the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and the progress and prosperity of the people of Cyprus.

    He also notes that all people of Greece and the entire political leadership of the country support the efforts of the government of Cyprus to end the Turkish occupation and reunite the island in a free, single prosperous and modern democracy.

    [02] Minister says improvement of older people's living primary objective

    The substantial and significant improvement of the quality of life of the pensioners, so that no one lives below the poverty line, is a primary and constant objective of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, said Labour Minister Zeta Emilianides.

    More than two million euro were spent in 2012 by the Ministry to support 87 projects providing care to around six thousand older people, she noted in her message on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on October 1st.

    The Minister said that the overall reform of the social welfare policy is one of the pre-election commitments of the President.

    [03] University of Cyprus and Ministry of Communications sign MoU

    The Ministry of Communication and Works and the University of Cyprus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enable the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

    The MoU was signed Monday by Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos and Rector of the University of Cyprus Professor Constantinos Christofides.

    The Minister of Communications said the MoU serves two goals. Firstly, it opens new ways of communication between the state and the University through the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and secondly it links the university with the economy and the market, which would prove to be to the benefit of Cyprus.

    [04] Employee monthly earnings down by 1.6% in Q2 2013

    Average gross employee earnings were down by 1.6% in the second quarter of 2013 compared with the first three months of 2012, Cyprus Statistical Service data published on Monday show.

    Preliminary data estimate that the average gross salary of men at the 2nd quarter of 2013 is €1,881. The average pay for men is €2,061 and for women €1,679.

    Compared to the second quarter of 2012, the average monthly income of employees fell by 1.6%. The drop was of the order of 1.7% for men and 1.0% for women respectively.
