    Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides will be departing on Monday for an official visit to Madrid, and on Tuesday he will be travelling to Lisbon.

    Issues on the agenda of the Minister's meetings in Madrid and Lisbon include bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem, recent developments in the Middle East and Southeastern Mediterranean, with particular emphasis on the situation in Egypt and Syria, and other European and regional issues of common interest.

    The Minister will return to Cyprus on September 19.

    [02] UK Cypriots and Conservative party reaffirm close links

    Representatives of the Conservatives for Cyprus group, consisting of members of the Greek Cypriot community in London, were received this week by the UK's ruling party vice-chairman Alok Sharma.

    "The purpose of the meeting was to build on the already strong links between the Conservative Party and the Greek Cypriot community in the UK," Sharma told CNA.

    "There is already a close connection with MPs representing north London and we want this connection to be strengthened even further. We examined practical ways of helping the community's voice to be heard," the Conservative party's vice-chairman, in charge of Black and Minority Ethnic policy, added.

    [03] Foreign Minister: Cyprus' assertive regional policy of added value to EU

    Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides expressed on Friday his wish that Cyprus' assertive regional policy is of added value in the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

    Kasoulides, who was speaking at the signing of a cooperation agreement between the University of Cyprus and the Israeli Embassy in Nicosia, expressed the government's support of the project, noting that "it is extremely important that ties between Cyprus and Israel do not remain only on issues like energy or whatever other cooperation".

    As we know, he pointed out, "cultural diplomacy is an important tool in conducting foreign policy".

    [04] Qatar supports efforts for just and viable Cyprus settlement

    Qatar supports the efforts for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, based on UN resolutions, Ambassador of Qatar to Cyprus Hussein Bin Ahmad Mohammad Ibrahim Al-Hmeid said on Friday, during a meeting with Minister of Defence Photis Photiou.

    According to a press release, Photiou briefed the Ambassador on developments in the energy sector and the Cyprus problem, noting that the government was making efforts to resume negotiations in October for a solution, which will be to the benefit of all Cypriots.

    During the meeting, Photiou and the Qatari Ambassador discussed the latest developments in Syria, deplored the use of chemical weapons against civilians, and expressed the wish for a solution without the further use of violence.

    [05] Central Bank Governor attends ECOFIN on EU economic outlook

    Central Bank of Cyprus Governor Panicos Demetriades is participating in ECOFIN discussions on, inter alia, the EU's economic outlook and financial stability.

    According to a Central Bank press release, Demetriades departed for Lithuania on September 11 in order to participate in the Informal Meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), which is taking place in the framework of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU.

    The Central Bank Governor is "participating in discussions relating, inter alia, to the economic outlook and financial stability of the EU, the future shape of the financial system and the Banking Union as well as the fight against tax evasion", the press release says.
