    Cyprus House of Representatives has approved by majority a resolution against a Syrian military intervention proposing instead the destruction of any chemicals by a UN special task force.

    At the same time the resolution asks the British Bases not to participate in any way in military operations in the Middle East or anywhere else.

    [02] Ministry to announce subsidized employment programs

    Increasing unemployment rate in Cyprus shows signs of being contained, Labour and Social Securities Minister Zeta Emilianides, has said.

    In addition, Emilianides told the press that the Labour Ministry will announce in the next few days three new subsidized employment programs aimed at combating unemployment in Cyprus.

    [03] FM travels to Vilnius for Informal Meeting of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council

    Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides travels Friday to Vilnius, Lithuania, to participate in the Informal Meeting of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council (Gymnich), according to an official press release.

    The informal meeting will be chaired by Catherine Ashton, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

    On 6 September the Ministers will discuss preparations for the European Council of December that will focus on the future of security and defence in Europe, as well as important issues related to the Eastern Partnership and Europe's Southern neighbourhood.

    [04] Cyprus can be a medical center in the Middle East, Dean of UCY Medical School says

    Cyprus can be a core of medical science in the Middle East with the opening of the Medical School from this academic year, Dean of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus (UCY) Andreas Adam told CNÁ.

    "Cyprus has great potential to become a medical center, because of its geographical position but also because of the high level of medicine that is able to provide," said Adam.

    Asked about the academic program of the School of Medicine, he said that it's based to the European standard program, where students are in direct friction with the medical environment, but there will also be theoretical courses, such as chemistry and biology during the first year. For this purpose, as from this year the Nicosia General Hospital becomes also a teaching hospital.

    [05] Rehn on the economic situation in Cyprus

    Poor practices of risk management and inadequate supervision were the main reasons for the current economic situation in Cyprus European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn, has said.

    He added that one more reason was the delay in measures taken by the Cypriot Government.
