  • [01] Defence Minister to take part in informal EU Defence Council, in Vilnius

    Cyprus Minister of Defence Photis Photiou departs for Vilnius on Thursday, where he will take part in an informal meeting of EU Ministers of Defence, an official press release issued here, today says.

    EU ministers will prepare for the December European Council, in Brussels, which will focus among, inter alia, on the Union's defence and military capabilities matters.

    At a working dinner, ministers will be briefed by operational leaders on EU military operations organised in the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).

    [02] UN millennium goals and separation of powers in 59th CPA Conference

    Reaching UN millennium goals until 2015 and the separation of powers in relation to good governance were some of the issues discussed so far in the framework of the 59th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, which takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa.

    Addressing a workshop on the UN millennium goals Cypriot MP Sophocles Fittis underlined the importance of parliaments' role in achieving them, referring in particular to the pressure and control they can exercise over governments as to their implementation.

    To that extent, he added that international cooperation is essential and proposed the creation of specific mechanisms, which will allow for the exchange of information in order to achieve concrete results.

    [03] Cyprus remains in recession during second quarter of 2013

    Eurozone pulls out of recession during the course of the second quarter of 2013, according to second estimates published by Eurostat on Wednesday. Cyprus and Greece recorded the highest recession, on an annual basis (second quarter of 2013 to second quarter of 2012)

    In particular, after staying in recession for four successive quarters, Eurozone countries recorded positive GDP growth by 0.3%, while the 28 EU member states grew by 0.4%.

    On an annual basis, comparing the second quarter of 2013 to the corresponding quarter in 2012, Eurozone GDP receded by 0.5% while remaining stable in the EU.

    [04] EU to contribute €2 million for the preservation of Cyprus' cultural heritage

    The European Commission (EC) has launched a new project to strengthen the efforts already in place to preserve the island-wide cultural heritage in Cyprus.

    The EU contribution will amount to €2 million and will support the work of the bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, said a press release issued today by the EC.

    "The successful measures already taken to preserve the island`s rich cultural heritage clearly show what both communities can achieve when they work together. It is very important that both sides continue the work to protect their common cultural heritage and also, through this, pave the way for reconciliation and the reunification of Cyprus", said Commissioner Füle.

    [05] Foreign doctors to be temporarily licensed to treat foreign patients in Cyprus

    The Ministry of Health has decided to grant temporary licenses to doctors from third countries who are interested in providing treatments and performing operations to foreign patients in Cyprus, provided that these medical treatments are not practiced by Cypriot doctors.

    Deputy Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said that the Council of Ministers who met on Wednesday was informed about this decision, which has been taken in the framework of efforts to promote medical tourism in Cyprus. He noted that licenses will be issued as long a certain preconditions set by the Medical Council are met.

    Papadopoulos said that the Health Ministry and Cyprus Medical Association would have a constant cooperation so that Cypriot doctors can benefit from this plan, through their further training in operations and medical practices, which are not provided in Cyprus.
