continues says [01] Largest computational resource for research in Eastern MediterraneanWithin the first 12 month of operation, the Cy-Tera, the supercomputer at The Cyprus Institute, consumed computational time that could be achieved by a standard double core laptop over the period of 456 years of continuous operation.According to an announcement issued by the Cyprus Institute, the Cy-Tera is the first national supercomputer facility open to all scientists in Cyprus, being in operation since May 2012. It operates following the model of other established European supercomputing centers and was funded through the infrastructure call of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and its operations are supported through the EU project LinkSCEEM-2 coordinated by The Cyprus Institute. [02] CTO: Tourist arrivals down 6.6% compared to last yearCyprus' tourist industry is recording a loss this season of 6.6% in comparison to last year, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Chairman Alecos Orountiotis has told CNA.Arrivals from Germany are down by more than 30%, from the UK by 9% whereas the Russian market seems to be doing well and has recorded an increase of 20% since 2012. In an interview with CNA, Orountiotis said that the situation and programming has changed a great deal since the Eurogroup decision of last March and although the CTO was hoping that 2013 would be a good year for the island's tourist industry, things went off track. [03] Dialogue with the EU to receive funding for public works projects continuesThe dialogue between European authorities and the Ministry of Communications and Works is in full swing with a view to secure funds for public works projects, according to Communications and Works Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos.Speaking after he was briefed on projects related to the motorway network and coastline projects, Mitsopoulos said a project that is considered suitable for financing is the 35km perimeter road around Nicosia. The Minister and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Alekos Michalides were informed about the progress of the development programme on the road network for urban areas as well as the motorway, which lays emphasis on completing the motorway network to mountain resorts and rural areas. [04] Cyprus Airways' Board working hard on restructuring plan, Minister saysThe Cyprus Airways Board of Directors is working very hard to put its house in order and implement the restructuring plan, already agreed with the trade unions, Communications and Works Minister Tasos Mistopoulos said here today.He also said that once the plan is in place and the company's financial situation is addressed, there should be an interest for investment. "No investor would be willing to shoulder the company debts and other financial obligations, which amount to some tens of millions of euro. The CY Board hopes that investors will express their interest in the company, once its efforts yield results," the Minister said after a meeting with the Department of Public Works. [05] Credit card transactions by Cypriots decrease in 2013Credit card purchases in Cyprus have recorded a decrease between January-July 2013, compared to the same period of last year, according to data released by JCC.The purchases during the above period stood at 1.200.271 billion euro and were down by 9% compared to last year. The amount of transactions carried out by visa cards was also down by 4%. The average amount in visa transactions was 69 euro compared to 73 in 2012. According to the data, in July the amount of transactions using credit cards amounted to 186.108 million euro, recording a decrease of 5% compared to 2012.
