  • [01] Cyprus has the largest available computational resource for academic research in E.Mediterranean

Within the first 12 month of operation, the Cy-Tera, the supercomputer at The Cyprus Institute, consumed computational time that could be achieved by a standard double core laptop over the period of 456 years of continuous operation.

According to an announcement issued by the Cyprus Institute, the Cy-Tera is the first national supercomputer facility open to all scientists in Cyprus, being in operation since May 2012. It operates following the model of other established European supercomputing centers and was funded through the infrastructure call of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and its operations are supported through the EU project LinkSCEEM-2 coordinated by The Cyprus Institute.

The facility, the announcement points out, is of regional relevance being currently the largest available computational resource for academic research in the Eastern Mediterranean. It demonstrates the leadership role that Cyprus can play in the region and its potential of becoming an educational and research bridge between Eastern Mediterranean and the EU.

[02] Maritime Labour Convention enters into force

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 enters on Tuesday, August 20 into force, as it has been ratified by the largest shipping nations.

A press release issued Monday by the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, notes that Cyprus is one of the first countries to have ratified the Convention. The Convention adopts standards governing the overall maritime labour relating to the minimum requirements, which regulate issues pertaining to the conditions and terms of employment, with special emphasis on young people, accommodation and catering, welfare and social security, and medical care and health protection of seafarers.

The Convention is designed to ensure the widest possible acceptance and consensus among seafarers, shipowners and governments, so that there is a substantial commitment to the principles of decent working conditions of seafarers on board ships and their fundamental rights.
