  • [01] Europeans seek ever more mobile bandwidth, but worry about cost

Europeans are increasingly eager for new technologies as shown by the latest EU-wide survey, however, while Europeans are open to the opportunities offered by new tools and services, as illustrated by the figures for new internet subscriptions and use of the internet for making voice calls, they still think twice before picking up the phone or going online because of the cost of these services.

Mobile phones are now everywhere, but only half are "smart". Subscriptions for phones that include internet access range from 55% in Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Finland, France and the Netherlands to below 35% in Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria and Portugal.

This lower penetration of smart phones is a feature in many countries where mobile Internet access subscribers limit time spent online because they are concerned about the charges - Hungary (35%), Portugal (58%), Greece (53%), Cyprus (52%), Belgium, (47%) and Romania (45%).

[02] Cyprus airport traffic expected to peak in next two weeks

Cyprus' international airports are expected to facilitate more than 2.5 thousand flights in the coming two weeks, until August 25, carrying around 400 thousand passengers.

Cyprus airports Spokesman Adamos Aspris told CNA that more than 1.8 thousand flights will be conducted via Larnaca international airport, with more than 280 thousand passengers. The international airport in Pafos is expected, according to Aspris, to facilitate 700 flights with 120 thousand passengers.

He added that, according to passenger data, Greece is again the most favorite destination for Cypriot passengers, with Kavala, Mykonos, Santorini, Thessaloniki and Skiathos ranking in the first positions. Other European destinations, such as Barcelona and Budapest are also very popular, Aspris noted.

[03] Electricity consumption in Cyprus down by 18% in the Summer

Electricity consumption in the summer months of 2013 is down by 18%, Electricity Authority of Cyprus Vice President Giorgos Pistentis has told CNA.

Replying to a question on the matter, Pistentis said this is due to the financial situation the country is facing, the fact that there have not been any extreme weather conditions this year, in addition to the fact that many businesses have shut down.

Referring to the power plant at Vassiliko, Limassol District, the largest on the island, he said units are fully operational and the EAC is waiting for natural gas to be used so that electricity can become cheaper for consumers.

[04] Commission to recover €180 m. of CAP expenditure from member states

A total of €180 million of EU agricultural policy funds, unduly spent by member states, is being claimed back by the European Commission today under the so-called clearance of accounts procedure.

However, because some of these amounts have already been recovered from the Member States the financial impact of today`s decision will be some €169 million.

Under this ldecision, funds will be recovered from 15 Member States: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Finland and the United Kingdom.
