  • [01] Police remains vigilant over terrorist threats

Cyprus Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou has assured that citizens in Cyprus must not worry over a possible terrorist attack on the island, after warnings that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

However, he stressed that there is no room for complacency and that everyone must remain vigilant.

Earlier, Police spokesman Andreas Angelides had said that police stepped up security measures over the weekend, particularly at embassies of western countries, after information conveyed by the secret services of the US and the UK over threats of a possible terrorist attack against western interests in the Middle East.

[02] Cyprus Archbishop expresses optimism for the economy

Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II said he was optimistic about the course of the country's economy, while noting that the main parameter for its recovery lay in boosting development.

The Primate of the Church of Cyprus also revealed that investors from Russia were planning to visit the island after August 15, in order to discuss possible investments with the government, mainly in the area of tourism and energy. The Archbishop said he had met with investors during a recent visit to Moscow, to attend celebrations for the 1025th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the country.

Speaking on Saturday, during a memorial service for the First President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, at the Monastery of Kykkos, Chrysostomos II said his optimism concerning the economy was founded on people's ability to work tirelessly in order to survive.

[03] Cyprus-Greece defence relations close, Minister says

Defence relations between Cyprus and Greece are very close and will remain so, Minister of Defence Photis Photiou said on Saturday.

Speaking from the Limassol, in the southern coast of Cyprus, while visiting the Greek Navy vessel "Samos" that anchored in the city's port, Photiou said that the Greek presence in the Mediterranean will be strong. "We will not follow, however, in Turkey's games to create tension" the Cypriot Minister added.

He said moreover that the two countries were redesigning their defence cooperation, "on the basis of new strategic developments in the region and while taking into account the exclusive economic zones.
