Manager [01] Spokesman: Financial sector on the right path to stabilizationGovernment Spokesman Christos Stylianides has said that Cyprus' financial sector is gradually recovering and is on the right path to stabilization. The Spokesman was speaking at a press conference on Thursday after the conclusion of the first Troika (EC, ECB, IMF) evaluation concerning the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding between Cyprus and its international lenders last March. Stylianides said that the government managed to achieve the targets set during the "four difficult months" following the Eurogroup's decisions on Cyprus. [02] British considerations relating to Cyprus in the early 1980'sThe declassified British archives of the Prime Ministerial Office referring to Cyprus over the period 1980-1983 include references to subjects relating to the political developments in the island.British government records of the time frequently detail the position of the USA on the negotiations over the Cyprus problem and the unilateral declaration of independence (UDI) of the so-called ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' by Rauf Denktash on 15/11/83. Two days after the UDI a State Department official informed British diplomats in Washington that the US administration would coninute to publicly call for a reversal of Denktash's declaration, even though he admitted there were few chances he would be convinced to oblige. The view in the State Department was rather that there should be an examination of whether the declaration was presenting new negotiating possibilities. [03] Co-ops to regain shares soon, says outgoing Cooperative General ManagerThe Cypriot state will become the largest shareholder in co-operative banking institutions, but they will have the right to be the first to buy back their shares after a transitional period of five years, the outgoing General Manager of the Central Cooperative Bank Erotokritos Chlorakiotis, has said."The co-operative movement is sufficiently strong and will soon be in a position to regain its shares" Chlorakiotis told a press conference, on Thursday. Following the conclusion of consultations with the Troika, the co-ops banks will receive €1.5 billion out of a €10 billion financial assistance programme the Cyprus Government has agreed to with international lenders. [04] Defence Minister: Foreign policy based on national interestsMinister of Defence Photis Photiou said on Thursday that the government was exercising its foreign and defence policy based on safeguarding its own sovereign rights and the national interests of the country.Photiou was commenting on a press report that the American Enterprise Institute saw possible Turkish intervention in Cyprus due to the natural gas issue, and that the US administration should follow Turkish moves. The Minister said possible broader cooperation in the region should have the sole aim of safeguarding stability and peace in the region, which was on a destabilisation track due to the challenges and tension caused by Turkey and the developments in the Middle East. [05] Research: Cyprus is a trap for recognised refugeesCyprus is a "trap" for recognised refugees, who say their rights are not guaranteed and they are not allowed to seek refuge anywhere else, since they have been granted refugee status in Cyprus, according to the findings of a report commissioned by the UN Refugee Agency (UNCHR) and conducted by the independent NGO "INDEX: Research and Dialogue".Today there are 3,631 persons in Cyprus with the status of recognised refugee, subsidiary protection and humanitarian status, and the research on "The needs of refugees and the integration process in Cyprus" indicated that the trends concerning their unemployment and marginalisation are worsening in pace with the financial crisis. These people are one of the most vulnerable groups in Cyprus and, as the researchers pointed out, many of the problems the recognised refugees face are also faced by vulnerable groups of Cypriots. According to the findings, which was based on the administration of a questionnaire to 192 individuals within the target population, semi-structured, in depth interviews with 40 separate individuals, and findings from a series of focus groups, the recognised refugees are marginalised from mainstream society and live in increasingly vulnerable and precarious circumstances.
