public funds [01] German Embassy: Reasons for situation of Cypriot banks rest in CyprusThe reasons for the situation of the Cypriot banks rest in Cyprus, the German Embassy in Nicosia has said in a press release.The press release refers to the testimony of former Finance Minister Michalis Sarris before the Investigation Committee for the state of the economy on the negotiations at the first Eurogroup of March 2012 as it was reported by CNA. During his testimony and replying to a question whether he believed that Cyprus` Euro area partners wanted to destroy Cyprus` image as a financial centre, Sarris replied: "Yes. The Germans believed that this is something not natural which was related with money laundering," adding that "they (the Germans) wondered how such a small country, like Cyprus, with no industrial output, could have such prosperity." [02] University of Cyprus: New internet portal for cancer researchA new internet portal grants biomedical researchers access to information about cancer research and established pharmaceutical agents from 83 global data sources.According to a University of Cyprus announcement, the main target of the portal "granatum.org" is to facilitate researchers, by accelerating the research process and cutting down costs. Granatum is aimed at university scientists, researchers and pharmaceutical companies, encouraging them to use the portal, share knowledge and collaborate in bringing about results. [03] Government aims at recapitalization of cooperative banks using public fundsGovernment Spokesman Christos Stylianides has said that as the process of the negotiations with the Troika is under way, the government pursues the decisive support of cooperative banks through their recapitalization with public funds.Stylianides noted in a written statement that any references to a lending rate are therefore inaccurate. The Spokesman also said in another written statement that despite the painfulness of the decisions taken, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and the government saved the country from the worst case scenario of the disorderly default that would be detrimental. [04] Industrial production index records 16.8% annual drop in MayThe industrial production index recorded an annual drop of 16.8% in May 2013 compared with May 2012, Cyprus Statistical Service data published on Tuesday show.According to the data the index of industrial production for May 2013 reached 75.4 units (base 2005=100), recording a decrease of 16.8% compared to May 2012. For the period January - May 2013, the index recorded a decrease of 13.0% compared to the same period of the previous year. The index for May 2013 in manufacturing reached 71.0 units, recording a decrease of 19.3% compared to May 2012. [05] New vehicle registrations fall by 36.6% in first half of 2013New vehicle registrations fell by 36.6% in the first six months of the year data published on Tuesday by the Cyprus Statistical Service show.The total number of newly registered vehicles came to 9,258 at the first six months of 2013 compared to 14,613 at the same period of 2012. Privately owned saloon registrations recorded a reduction of 38.7% standing at 6,627 compared to 10,806 registered during the first six months of 2012.
