[02] EC: EU Directives regarding information and consultation of workers are effective and coherentThe three EU Directives regarding information and consultation of workers are generally relevant, effective, coherent and mutually reinforcing and the benefits they generate are likely to outweigh the costs, according to the results of an evaluation to identify excessive burdens, overlaps, gaps or inconsistencies which may have appeared since the adoption of three EU Directives released by the European Commission.Although the evaluation finds the three Directives broadly fit for purpose, it also brings to light a number of shortcomings in their scope and application. As far as the scope is concerned, a significant share of the workforce is not covered by the provisions, due to the exclusion of small businesses, of public administration and of seafarers. There is also room for improvement regarding the application, particularly in countries with less-developed traditions, by promoting an information and consultation culture among social partners, strengthening institutions, promoting agreements on information and consultation, disseminating good practices, raising awareness and ensuring enforcement. [05] London economists ponder Ôroika`s futureEuropean Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding`s recent comments that the Troika`s time under its current shape is over has reignited the debate in Europe over whether the IMF and the Commission/ECB should head their own ways. In the UK some economists have been discussing such a prospect for some time now.Last month, Wolfgang Münchau of the Financial Times wrote that "the Fund is clearly not comfortable with its relegation to the position of a junior partner, considering that it is the only organisation in the Troika with any know-how in crisis resolution. " Commenting on the IMF`s "mea culpa" regarding the handling of the crisis in Greece, he added that "if the IMF is serious about its own analysis - and it should be - it should either force a policy change, or be ready to leave the Troika."
