  • [01] EAC's plans for changes discussed with Troika

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) must become competitive as regards production and supply of electricity, while maintaining a monopoly in transmission and distribution, the EAC's General Manager Stelios Stylianou said on Friday.

Stylianou told reporters after a meeting he had with the Troika that the Authority can remain under the umbrella of the public sector if it moves on with all necessary institutional and organisational changes.

Asked whether the Troika suggested privatisation of services provided by the EAC, Stylianou said that, "given the evolution of the energy sector, in the future the EAC must be competitive as far as production and supply are concerned and have a monopoly on transmission and distribution" of electricity. He added that the lenders "seemed satisfied with the changes" the Authority is planning in order to become more competitive and efficient, to the benefit of the Cypriot consumers.

[02] Rescue operation for French sailor off Cyprus' coast

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) of the Cyprus Republic has launched a rescue operation from a French army ship, which was sailing off the coast of Cyprus.

The injured sailor, suffering from severe concussion, was transferred by helicopter to Nicosia General Hospital for treatment.

According to an announcement, the JRCC received an emergency call in the early hours of Saturday from the French army ship ĞL.D.V LAVALEEğ, which was sailing 60 nautical miles east of Cape Greco, in the southeastern part of the island. The sailor was admitted to the Emergency Room and underwent surgery.

[03] Government has implemented many of its promises, President says

The government, despite the financial crisis, has managed to implement much of what it has promised the Cypriot people, President Nicos Anastasiades has said.

Speaking Friday evening at a village in the Limassol district, the President said the government has recently managed to increase EU funding for various projects in Cyprus, adding that a great number of these projects will generate jobs and contribute towards growth in the rural areas of the island.

The President acknowledged that the government would like to see more action towards what it had promised to the citizens during the presidential campaign, but noted that 90% of what was announced has been put into practice.

He also said that the government wants to give incentives for growth in the rural areas in order to encourage the young people to stay in these areas and not move to the cities.
