  • [01] Cabinet appoints natural gas negotiating team

The Cabinet has appointed a team responsible for negotiating with Noble Energy International, Delek and other companies on the earliest possible supply of Cyprus with natural gas from block 12 in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the construction of an LNG plant as soon as possible.

Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides announced the appointment of the negotiating team. Stylianides further pointed out that whenever necessary representatives from the Attorney General's office and the Republic's Audit Office may also take part as observers in the team's meetings.

[02] Equipment sent to occupied areas to combat oil spill

Oil absorbent booms were dispatched to the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus after a request by the Turkish Cypriots for assistance to deal with an oil spill off the coast of the occupied village of Gastria.

The equipment was sent to the occupied north via the Agios Dometios checkpoint, a procedure monitored by UNFICYP and in the presence of members of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkish Cypriot Commerce, in an effort to limit the repercussions from the 100 tonnes oil spill on Tuesday after a pipeline from a tanker broke during attempts to supply the AKSA Energy power station.

UNFICYP Spokesman Rolando Gomez said the transfer of the oil booms was successfully completed yesterday at 1900 at Ayios Dometios crossing point. The procedure, he said, lasted only 5 minutes and UNFICYP was there to facilitate the transfer from one truck to the other truck.
