  • [01] Energy efficiency discussed in Nicosia

    Energy efficiency as a way to exit the crisis was discussed at a meeting, in Nicosia, on Friday. Cypriot MEP Takis Hadjigeorgiou noted that the exploitation of Cyprus' hydrocarbon reserves is the most important prospect for growth and prosperity.

    He said it was imperative that the planning and the construction of the necessary infrastructure must go ahead in a timely manner. He also referred to geopolitical developments in the region. Hadjigeorgiou spoke of EU efforts to stop being dependent purely on Russia for energy and Russia's reaction to these efforts.

    On his part Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority President Costas Shiammas spoke of the vision of European Regulatory Authorities to have credibility, approachable prices, simplification of information and ensure protection of the consumers.

    Private investments in energy infrastructure are very important, Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Stelios Himonas said, adding that current difficult times call for a systematic effort to secure EU funds. Referring to the increase of the contribution of renewable in electricity production, he said that it has reached 7.86% as a result of the support schemes run by the ministry since 2004.

    [02] Baghdatis to compete in the German Bundesliga

    Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis will compete this weekend in the German Bundesliga.

    He will be representing TC Blau-Weiss Hall and will compete against Czech Lukas Rosol at 14.00 Cyprus time.

    He begins the US Open Series campaign at the Citi Open in Washington, on July 29.

    [03] Australian Senate President pays official visit to Cyprus

    The President of Australian Senate John Hogg will pay Cyprus an official four-day visit, as head of a delegation. The visit comes after an invitation by the President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou.

    According to an official announcement, Hogg will be received by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, and meet with his Cypriot counterpart Yiannakis Omirou.

    He will also meet separately with the Foreign Minister, the Vice President and members of the Cyprus-Australia Parliamentary Committee, as well as the Mayors of Famagusta and Nicosia.
