  • [01] Cyprus enters new period in dealing with bank problems, government says

Cyprus is entering a new period in dealing with the difficulties of its banking sector, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides has said, commenting on the outcome of a Frankfurt meeting, between Cyprus President and the President of the ECB this week.

The message this meeting has sent is that Cyprus can pull through the difficulties and give new perspective to its banking sector, Stylianides added.

The Government Spokesman said that President Nicos Anastasiades ensured that cooperation with the ECB will be constant, in order to overcome practical difficulties that may arise during the implementation of the loan agreement, Cyprus has signed with its international lenders.

He reiterated that Cyprus may exit faster the Memorandum of Understanding by implementing the loan agreement faithfully, as was the case in Ireland.

[02] Decisions on the CNHC competencies in the coming days, says Energy Minister

The Government will take decisions on the competencies of the Cyprus National Hydrocarbons Company (CNHC) within the coming days, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis has said.

The CNHC, a private firm, was established by the previous government in 2012 with a mandate to conduct the negotiations with companies on the infrastructure aiming at exploiting natural gas reserves discovered in Cyprus' offshore blocks and especially the Liquefied Natural Gas terminal to be constructed in Vasilikos area.

However the new government has said it is considering amending the CNHC mandate or merging it with the Natural Gas Public Company, DEFA, which was established in 2007 with an initial mandate to secure the necessary natural gas quantities for Cyprus` electricity needs and to safeguard energy security.

"We will have decisions hopefully in the coming days," Lakkotrypis said replying to a question on the timing of the decision.

[03] Cyprus airports not affected by developments in Egypt

The latest developments in Egypt have not affected air connections between Cyprus and Egypt, Adamos Aspris, Hermes Airports' Spokesman, told CNA. In addition, he said, there has been no need so far to provide assistance to airlines that flight to and from Cairo.

Asked by CNA if the situation in Egypt affected Cyprus' two main international airports, Aspris said that two flights - a departure and an arrival - are scheduled to and from Cairo for Thursday, and will take place as planned.

Finally, Aspris said that the authorities of Hermes Airports are closely monitoring developments in the neighboring country and "we are in close contact with all relevant departments in case of an emergency."
