  • [01] Project to protect water quality and biodiversity in Salt Lake underway

Nutrient loads need to be reduced at the Larnaca Salt Lake and alternative ways have to be found to reduce pollutants, the Ministry of Agriculture says.

According to an official press release issued here on Friday, the Department of the Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment has been implementing a new water quality management project in the framework of an EU Commission funded programme "Life Water".

The aim is to protect the quality of water and biodiversity in the sensitive areas of Cyprus, setting goals of pollution reduction via defining the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), that is to say the maximum amount of a pollutant that an area of water can receive and still meet water quality standards.

[02] Minister to report on work done by Cyprus Presidency on Home Affairs issues

Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou is in Brussels where she will present a report on the work done by the Cyprus Presidency of the EU on Home Affairs issues before the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament.

According to an official announcement, the Minister is expected to stress the significant progress that has been achieved with regard to the objective of establishing a Common European Asylum System. She will also refer to the body of laws regarding legal immigration to the initiatives of the Presidency in relation to combat trafficking in persons and promote the integration of immigrants.

She will also brief the Committee members on the efforts to tackle illegal immigration and the sincere and genuine solidarity towards Member States subject to particular pressure as well as to the progress achieved in Regulations relating to the Home Affairs Financing Tools under the Multiannual Financial Framework.

[03] Cyprus and Russia sign MoU on customs cooperation

Cyprus and Russia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on customs cooperation, at the Ministry of Finance, on Friday.

The MoU enhances customs cooperation between the two countries and includes provisions for customs offences on the one hand and mechanisms to combat them on the other, Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Christos Patsalides said after signing the agreement on the part of Cyprus.

Asked if the MoU is an answer to those who accuse Cyprus of money laundering, Patsalides said "it is an additional tool to help combat all such offences".
