  • [01] President awards distinction to professors Brezin and Shopper

    President Demetris Christofias awarded on Thursday the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Cyprus, one of the highest distinctions of the state, to professors Edouard Brezin and Herwig Shopper, for their contribution in science, technology and education in Cyprus and the region.

    Speaking during the ceremony, the President said that the distinction is an act of respect and recognition for the work carried out by people of science, as the necessary leverage for development and progress.

    He added that both professors have been actively engaged in promoting research in Cyprus, through their participation at the development of the Cyprus Institute, a research and education institution with a scientific and technological orientation.

    [02] Sefcovic says Cyprus EU Presidency has done excellent job

    The Cyprus EU Presidency has done an excellent job, Vice President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic has said.

    He also congratulated the Presidency for its successes during the last six months and expressed his thanks.

    "The Cyprus Presidency has done an excellent job. Congratulations and many thanks" Sefcovic wrote in his twitter account.

    [03] CNA and University of Cyprus sign MoC to join forces

    The Cyprus News Agency and the University of Cyprus signed on Wednesday a Memorandum of Cooperation, in order to "develop relations for their mutual benefit and the benefit of the society".

    The agreement was signed by the Chairman of the Board of CNA, Larcos Larcou and the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Constantinos Christofides.

    Both Christofides and Larcou welcomed the agreement, which is valid for three years and will be renewed automatically. The Memorandum of Cooperation foresees that the two sides will organize, jointly or along with third parties, conferences, seminars and one-day events on topics concerning journalism, communication and media, and Cyprus-related events in general.

    [04] Rompuy invites leaders to EU Summit which will focus on the EMU

    A roadmap for the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) will be the focus of the European Council meeting that will take place Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

    In his invitation letter to the heads of state and government of the EU, President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy notes that the main purpose of this meeting will be for us to discuss a "specific and timebound roadmap" for the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union.

    "It is indeed crucial that, in order to boost confidence in the long term viability of the EMU, we set out the milestones that will ensure we close the gaps in the EMU architecture which were revealed by the crisis", he points out.

    [05] Parties say a Cyprus solution could be a remedy to the crisis

    A solution to the Cyprus problem will be a remedy to the economic crisis, leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Political Parties have agreed, during their regular meeting hosted by the Embassy of Slovakia at Ledra Palace.

    According to a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties expressed opinions on the issue "How to ensure that the new negotiation process in Cyprus talks leads to an early solution" as proposed by the hosting party the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (CTP).

    In the communiqué it is stated that all the parties should recognize that there is no perfect solution for anybody and a mutually accepted solution could only be found by give and take based on UN resolutions and parameters.
