  • [01] EU Council in favour of investments in innovative and new technologies

    The EU Competitiveness Council decided to stimulate investments in innovative and new technologies.

    The Council, which was chaired by Cypriot Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis adopted conclusions on an update to the European Industrial Policy and its contribution to growth and economic recovery.

    In statements at a press conference, Sylikiotis noted that the conclusions place emphasis on stimulating investments in innovative and new technologies, allowing EU companies to derive the maximum benefits from the internal market and international markets, improving access to finance, and, finally, increasing investment in people and skills.

    [02] International Communist Parties adopt resolution on Cyprus

    A resolution expressing disappointment at the current stalemate in direct negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem and condemning Ankara's negative stance has been adopted at the 14th International Meeting of Communist and Workers Parties, in Beirut.

    According to a press release, the resolution expresses support "for the ongoing struggle of the Cypriot people to find a just, under the circumstances, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem".

    Participants "express their disappointment at the current stalemate at the direct negotiations process, condemn the negative, non-constructive stance of Ankara and of the Turkish Cypriot leadership".

    [03] Sefcovic: Scientists to thank Cyprus Presidency for Patent Deal

    Scientists will be those to thank the most the Cyprus EU Presidency, Vice President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic stressed on Tuesday.

    Sefcovic who was speaking at the press conference of the EU General Affairs Council together with Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis, said that there are many successes achieved by the Cyprus EU Presidency but placed emphasis on the agreement reached on the EU unitary patent package.

    "I will highlight one of the successes, which took us the longest period, some even say 30 years, which is the patent. I hope that scientists would be those to thank the Cyprus EU Presidency the most", he said.

    [04] CFA and KTFF express intention to unify football in Cyprus

    President of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and president of the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation (KTFF) Costakis Koutsokoumnis and Hasan Sertoglu respectively expressed their intention to unify football in Cyprus.

    Delegations of CFA and the Turkish Cypriot Federation met today at the CFA premises in Nicosia.

    "We had a very pleasant and very interesting first official meeting between officials of the Cyprus Turkish football federation and the CFA" Koutsokoumnis said after the meeting, noting that the fact that the meeting attracted so much interest from the Press indicates that the football community of Cyprus wants a solution to this football problem.

    [05] Supreme Court decides retrial of Helios case

    The Supreme Court decided on Tuesday by majority the retrial of the Helios case, adopting the appeal filed by the Attorney General against the ruling of the Assize Court.

    The decision for a retrial of the case with a different composition of the Assize Court was taken with six judges voting in favour, two voting against and one supporting a different view.

    On August 14, 2005, 121 people were killed when an Helios Boeing 737 crashed into the mountainside of Grammatiko, north of the Greek capital, on its way to Prague. Most victims were holidaymakers from Cyprus. Five persons faced charges of manslaughter and causing the death of all 121 people on board by reckless, dangerous and careless action.

    [06] Agriculture Minister: Cyprus in EU emissions programme with €1.8 million

    Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Sophocles Aletraris said on Tuesday that the Republic of Cyprus is participating in the EU programme for the reduction of emissions, worth €7.2 billion, for the period 2010-2012, with €1.8 million.

    Speaking at a press conference regarding the UN Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar, Aletraris expressed hope that at the next Conference in Poland it would be possible to achieve more for the reduction of emissions, noting that this was necessary in order to restrict the increase of global temperature from the greenhouse effect to 2 degrees Celsius, beyond which climate change would be detrimental.

    Referring to Cyprus` contribution of €1.8 million to the EU programme, Aletraris said the first installment has already been given and that by the end of the year or in early 2013 the rest would be given.
