  • [01] Uniform implementation of acquis in workplace health and safety important

    Efforts to achieve effective and uniform implementation of health and safety acquis communautaire in the workplace contribute significantly to the broader goal of EU social cohesion, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous has said.

    Charalambous was addressing an EU Senior Labour Inspectors´ Committee (SLIC) which takes place in Nicosia, on Thursday, in the context of the Cyprus EU Council Presidency at the 2nd half of 2012.

    She further pointed out that constantly changing circumstances in the workplace to do with new technologies and materials makes adaptation, guidance, coordination and enforcement of the uniform legislative implementation difficult.

    [02] FinMin: Interest rate for Cyprus' loan expected at 2.5%

    The interest rate of Cyprus` bailout loan expected to be around 2.5%, Finance Minister Vasos Shiarly has said.

    Speaking before the House Committee on Finance, in Nicosia, where he presented the 2013 State Budget and the 2013-2016 Medium Term Fiscal Framework, the Minister also said he expected the discussion in the Eurogroup during the next few weeks on the approval of Cyprus` bailout agreement to be "as difficult as the process" of negotiations with the Troika.

    He also noted that some draft bills, pertinent to the bailout agreement, need to be urgently discussed and ratified by the House of Representatives, before the Eurogroup meeting, to avoid possible problems by some Eurozone members.

    [03] IMF: Discussions on Cyprus continue

    Discussions with Cypriot authorities and European partners are continuing on financing solutions, consistent with the sustainability of the Cypriot debt, Gerry Rice, Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) External Relations Department has said.

    Invited to say when there will be a programme for Cyprus, Rice said that he has no specific date to announce. He said there are discussions, the IMF had a mission in Cyprus and is expecting the diligence audit for the banks, adding that all this will be taken into consideration.

    Asked when the results of the review concerning the banking sector will be available, he said that "the preliminary estimate of bank capital needs is expected from PIMCO during the first week of December and these results will be instrumental in determining the financing envelope that would underpin a potential programme with Cyprus."

    [04] Hellenic Bank records profit during first nine months 2012

    The Hellenic Bank Group recorded a profit amounting to €219 thousand during the first nine months of 2012, compared to a loss of €73,1 million during the responding period of 2011.

    According to the group's financial results presented to investors on Thursday, during the nine months ended 30 September 2012, the impairment amount on the value of the Greek Government bonds was €7,3 million compared to €55,0 million during the nine months ended 30 September 2011.

    The total amount of impairment for the eligible securities, which was recognized during the years 2011 and 2012, before the exchange under the Voluntary participation of private plan (PSI +) on 12 March 2012, accounted for 77,3% of their nominal value.

    [05] Cypriot enterprises lag behind with regard to E-commerce

    Cypriot enterprises are still lagging behind with regard to E-Commerce, a survey by the Statistical Service published today shows.

    According to the annual survey "Information and Communication Technologies Usage and E-Commerce in Enterprises 2012", carried out by Cyprus Statistical Service, only 8.4% of the enterprises covered in the survey said they accepted orders through the internet, and 18.6% of the enterprises placed orders via the internet.

    The survey covered 1,431 enterprises with 10 or more employees in specific categories of economic activity. With a reference period of January 2102, the data were collected with personal interviews and covered the southern government controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus (the northern part is occupied by Turkish troops).

    [06] House to host Chairpersons of Human Rights Committees Conference

    The House of Representatives will host December 2-3 here a Conference of the Chairpersons of Human Rights Committees of EU member states parliaments, candidate and under accession countries and the European Parliament, in the context of the parliamentary dimension of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, during the second half of 2012.

    During the Conference, to be presided by Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities between Men and Women Sophoclis Fittis, participants will focus on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, the Need to Reconcile family life and professional activities and the issue of Protecting human rights in times of crisis - economic crisis or threats to security.

    The first session of the Conference will focus on The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU and will be addressed by Kinga Göncz, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament.
