  • [01] ESA official: Everyday two objects re-enter the Earth`s atmosphere

Over 16,000 large objects are currently orbiting the Earth, with two of them re - entering the Earth`s atmosphere each day, according to experts at the European Space Agency, who say that the probability of a human being being hit by debris is estimated at one in a trillion.

CNA has talked to Emmet Fletcher, manager of the European Space Agency`s SSA Space Surveillance and Tracking Segment, who said that predictions as to where an orbit will fall are just "rough estimates". Space debris or space junk are objects which are in orbit around the planet but have no longer any useful purpose. They include everything from spent rocket stages and defunct satellites to erosion, explosion and collision fragments.

As the orbits of these objects often overlap the trajectories of newer objects, debris is a potential collision risk to operational spacecraft. The vast majority of the estimated tens of millions of pieces of space debris are small particles, less than 1 centimetre. A much smaller number of the debris objects are larger, over 10 centimetres. Against larger debris, the only protection is to manoeuvre the spacecraft in order to avoid a collision.

Fletcher told CNA that currently, there are over 16,000 large objects orbiting the Earth. He added that of these, about 3,500 were launched as satellites, while the rest are debris or launchers which were created through impact, explosions or were just abandoned in orbit. The number of operational satellites is just over 1,000. As to how many objects re-enter the Earth`s atmosphere every year, he said that their number reaches around 600 to 700 objects, or two a day.

[02] Equality Summit focuses on social face of crisis

The crisis is not just an economic or financial one but increasingly a social one and collective and coordinated action needs to be undertaken in order to protect vulnerable groups of society.

This was the message sent by the speakers of the introductory session of the Equality Summit 2012 which is underway, on Thursday and Friday, at the ‘Filoxenia' conference centre, in Nicosia.

The majority of Europeans, 54%, consider that the crisis has had a negative impact on policies promoting equality and non discrimination, according to a Eurobarometer survey, published on Thursday, the results of which were outlined during EU Commission DG Justice Equality Director Aurel Ciobanu Dordea's address.

[03] Cyprus Dairy Industry Organisation appeal against OHIM for Halloumi to be introduced before the Court

The Court of Justice of the European Union announced on Thursday that it has introduced to the Court the case C-393/12 P, appeal by Cyprus Dairy Industry Organisation (Organismos Kypriakis Galaktokomikis Viomichanias) against the judgment of General Court of 13 June 2012 in Case T‑534/10, in relation with HALLOUMI.

According to the Press and Information Services of the Court of Justice, the Organisation is the holder of community collective trade mark HALLOUMI. In 2005, the German Garmo AG applied for the Community trade mark HELLIM for dairy products.

The Organisation filed a notice of opposition to that application which was rejected by Board of Appeal of the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM).

The Organismos demands from the Court of Justice the reversal of General Court's decision, supporting that the General Court incorrectly applied the regulation No 207/2009 for community mark, because falsely rejected the visual and phonetic similarities of "hellim" and "hallumi".

[04] The Sovereign Order of Malta hosts forum on cultural heritage

Ôhe Sovereign Order of Malta is organising a Forum on the "Protection and Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Mediterranean", on 22 and 23 November in the southern coastal town of Limassol.

The forum is organized with the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNESCO and the European Commission, on the occasion of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. According to an official announcement, the main focus of the Forum will be on the impact of natural catastrophes and conflicts on cultural heritage, the new perspectives for cultural heritage in the light of the Arab Spring, the specific issues of sacred heritage and the responsibility of major institutional players for conservation of the cultural heritage within the context of the economic crisis.

[05] Cyprus Contemporary Wine Symposium opens in Nicosia

Wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to appreciate wine produced in Cyprus at the 1st Pancyprian Symposium on Cyprus contemporary wine which opens its gates today, in Nicosia.

Addressing the opening Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sofoclis Aletraris noted that "such events promote the Cyprus wine and contribute to the development of wine education and culture, while providing Cypriot consumers with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the sector and of our wine heritage".

"The contribution of the wine sector to the economic growth of Cyprus and wine producing countries of the EU is of great importance since rural development, employment and the environmental impact are variables that are strongly interconnected", he said.

[06] FM advises public avoid visiting the Sinai Peninsula

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advice advising the public to avoid travelling to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt unless absolutely necessary due to intense activity by armed militia close to the border with the Gaza strip.

An official press release issued here on Thursday warns that this is the case "especially on the Feast Day of St. Catherine, due to high risk of a terrorist attack against pilgrims visiting the homonymous Monastery and to follow news reports and developments in the country".
